It seems that the system ran out of disk -- I'm trying to do some
cleanup to get things moving again....

There is now a big backlog of spots to be processed and it seems to be
processing them very slowly.... I'm keeping an eye on it....

Hi Philip,

I also see no monitoring stations active at all which certainly doesn'nt reflect the reality (MSK144 and FT8 at least). I suppose that the same issue is also creating this side effect ?

For some reason, the system is only importing spots at a low rate (and I
don't really understand why). The queue of spots to be imported into the
database is building up faster than it can process them. Also, for some
reason, the average spot rate has been going up. I suspect that the
system has fallen over some cliff.....

Part of the problem is that I'm on vacation at the moment with poor
internet connectivity. This doesn't help.

Sorry. I hope that the system will get better soon.....

As much as this system is used, sounds like you need a vacation backup. I understand your frustration. Thanks for what you're doing!!!

Probably due to FT8 being very popular.  Generating 4 times the number of spots

I just turned off pksreporter reporting in my JT-65 software. I am certain that will fix it.  ;)

Can you stop accepting new spots until it catches up? Is historical data important? (it is not to me)
I think the Perseid meteor event and basic real-time use would take precedence.
In any event- You have created a really cornerstone type of system makes me feel like the community could chip in and maybe you could get a hosted server or harden the system in other ways.
I am very grateful as I use the system every day. I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation!!

I think lots of people would be happy to contribute towards the running costs. How about a PayPal donation link on the home page?

Definitely a donor link. I feel this is a really important site -- I use it to encourage newer hams to look at the variety of modes.

Looks like processing is about 18 hours behind, as of 0025 on 13-Aug.

At 0147 I saw the counter start running again. I guess it will take a while to catch up with the backlog. Thanks for this great resource and I add my voice as well: we need a donation button to help you run the site bigger and better.

32 hour backlog when I looked just now, wow!
Is there any method to flush the backlog Philip? Just curious, as they wouldn't really matter at this pont being so stale.
Just an idea, enjoy the vacation!

You mean PSKREPORTER is operated and maintained by a single individual?
So many developers of software seem to depend on pskreporter spotting and puzzles me how only one person is in charge.
You would think a "group" of individuals would have access to such a thing so as to maintain it 24/7.
I think the same thing happened to WSPR where only one person was in charge and despite the 1000`s of offers to help,it remained ignored.
Should be more options for uploading spots in our software.
Sorry to be so blunt, but this seems a lot for one person to handle and please, take no offense.A LOT to handle ?

Some are probably familiar with UIVIEW-32 ?
There in software one can choose among several servers in which to upload data.
Software like WSJT would be best to have an option for uploading named "UPLOAD SPOTS" where servers can be selected by choice to where the data is uploaded.I bet there are dozens in this group with this ability but someone needs to make the additional changes in software.
Perhaps new versions of WSJT and others will eventually have this user option when all else fails.
Just trying to simplify a problem with a solution.

I agree, something needs to change.  Are there any backup servers or systems?  Seems odd that help is offered but not taken advantage of.

PSKreporter is Phil's personal hobby project and not a commercial service. Phil doesn't owe the radio hobby community anything and, quite frankly, making demands of Phil to guarantee 100% uptime show a lack of appreciation and perspective. Is someone's quality of life really impacted by PSKreporter to the extent implied by some of these posts?

None of us can speak for Phil, but many people that provide services to the radio hobby community (such as the OpenHPSDR programmers) don't want to turn their hobby into a full-time job and whether you realize it or not, this is what several of you are demanding. A healthy approach to this is, perhaps, to enjoy PSKreporter for what it is and, if you can't, create your own alternative.

Mike - N8MSA

Instead of grumbling about a problem with a piece of personal hobby software I think that the biggest help would for us to take the load off the server by turning off reporting while the system catches up. I did a while ago. It is a fantastically useful resource and yes, frustrating when it fails our expectations but it is provided out of the goodness of Phil's heart and we should *all* be *helping* the best way we can.

Would be an idea Phil to put a request on the map page for people to stop reporting, say for at least 24 hrs.
Enjoy your vacation and let the system do a little catching up.

I am  finding the thread as to why it is down somewhat disturbing now, until recently it be all support and offers of help and understanding  from a bunch of folks and now a few disgruntled folks have jumped on complaining about it being down without understanding that this is a single person providing pskreporter as a hobby and a fun thing for all us Hams , we don't pay for this and our HAM contact logs do not suffer,   it is unfortunate  that +Philip Gladstone is on vacation we all need a break,  so folks take a deep  breath  this is meant to be a fun hobby, we should not be treating this as a government service or a commercial for profit product,  we need to support Peter with good will, Karma  and thanks.

Philip, thanks for all the work you've put into PSKReporter. I hope you have the best vacation ever.

Cheers,

P.S. I tend to think that a Donate button would be good. But if it created a greater sense of entitlement or caused you to feel unwelcome pressure, then I wouldn't think it was a good thing. That's entirely your call, of course. I'm merely trying to help you think through the issue.

Kissing ass does not solve the issue but rather feeds ego`s.The fact of the matter is there can and should be alternatives, not a one person show. There are 100`s of people out there that will gladly create and setup a working server for this stuff. The problem is these guys refuse to give it up for personal "control" reasons. After reading many comments, some of you sound pathetic, desperate brown noser`s.
As far as I am concerned,it can go away completely...if it does not work, what good is it?

Lighten up James. We hams only depend on our rig and antenna, nothing else. pskreporter is a nice tool to use and it makes live a little easier, nothing more. No tools works 100% of the time and patients is needed when doing repairs in case of failure. If you can't handle that, then I hope you will go away completely.....if you can't work with it, what good is it to stick around?

Yours sincerely,

I've experienced roughly 99.9% uptime. That's an infinite return on my $0 investment. What's not to like?

Philip has absolutely no obligation--legal, moral, or other-- to turn the fruit of his labor over to a group of self-styled experts. More to the point, if PSKReporter is so bad and their expertise is so great, what need should they have for what Philip has done?

Thing is, for every 50,000 or so people who think of themselves as technical entrepreneurs maybe one has what it takes to turn nothing into something. All the others are capable of doing is to take somebody else's something and very likely turn it into nothing. Most countries have adopted more or less free markets, property rights, and the rule of law to slow them down. Countries that haven't done so suffer anemic economies.
