What is Permalink?

Hi folks - Pardon my ignorance but can somebody here please point me in the direction of an explanation of Permalink. Clicking on it does not seem to alter anything on the display map. Thanks.

This allows you to set all the parameters and then generate a link that
presets those values. I.e. if you set the filtering to G4EFE and then
copy the permalink and (say) make it a bookmark, then whenever you go to
that bookmark, you will end up with the right filtering.
