I'm getting this error message when using Psiphon 3 client 78 when using Windows 8.1.
"Failed to start the HTTP proxy (258,0)"

It's working fine on my Windows machine.  Anyone has any ideas?

Thank you.

Hi. This error message indicates that Polipo, the local http proxy, could not run. If you are running an antivirus or personal firewall or other security tool, check their logs to see if they prevented a process named psiphon-polipo.exe from executing.

Hi.  Thanks for your reply.

Well it definitely has to something to do with my Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 because when I disable it, then I can connect with Psiphon.

However, when I go look for psiphon-polipo.exe on my Kaspersky, I see it under the Trusted Group, and I'm not sure what to look for to unblock it.

In my original note, I meant to say, Psiphon works with my Windows 7 machine but now my new Windows 8.1 machine.  I examine the Kaspersky settings on both laptops and they seem to be the same, so I don't really know what the problem is.

Do you know where to look?

Thank you!

Hi. If Kaspersky is enforcing a firewall, check that it is allowing local processes to access ports 1080 and 8080.

Hello,

I'm not really familiar with Kaspersky since it is a company installed program but I have been able to go into:

Settings - Firewall - Network Packet Rules - I set "TCP and UDP connection through local ports" to ALLOW.

Settings - Firewall - Application Network Rules - Select psiphon3-polipo.exe - Network Rules - then I added this Rule:

Protocol:TCP
Direction: Outbound/Inbound
Remote Ports:
Local Ports: 1080, 8080
Address: Any address

and then I create the same rule for UDP.

But I still cannot connect.  Are these parameters right?

I tried adding these rules to psiphon3.exe, psiphon3-meek.exe, psiphon3-plonk.exe but still cannot connect.

Should I try creating rules with other protocols too?  (Options are ICMP. ICMPv6, IGMP, GRE.)

I also get the Psiphon error message "Terminate Process failed for process with PID xxxx" before the "Failed to start HTTP proxy (258,0) message.
Does that mean anything?

Funny thing is that on my Windows 7 laptop, I don't have to do any of these things (the configuration doesn't show any of these rules) and Psiphon works fine.

Do you have any other helpful thoughts?

Thank you.

Hi. Those firewall rules probably are not necessary. It sounds like the problem is only with running or connecting to polipo. Did you try rebooting the computer?

Yes I rebooted - didn't fix the problem.

I ended up uninstalling Kaspersky and running Mcafee.  Psiphon is working now.

Guess it has something to do with Kaspersky on Windows 8.1 that Psiphon doesn't like.

Thank you.
