Since I started this user group, I've experienced a negative effect
from the "Artificial Intelligence" part of the name, and if you're
already thinking "That was the whole point wasn't it?" - then you've
proven my point yet once more.
A key component in the name is "and intersecting sciences", and if I
were to draw a Venn diagram of these intersections, the "AI" would be
a very small chunk. Remember that a key goal of this group is to
break away from the purely comp-sci world of AI, and enjoy the company
of all the various sciences that are related to AI, perhaps not even
directly.
For this reason, I'm strongly suggesting a change of name; I would
hate to disappoint any members who attend a talk by misleading them in
any way; having a name that implies a strong degeneralization of what
this group is about can do this as I've seen from contacting almost
every department outside of CS.
I've been thinking about this for a few days now, and tonight I met
some very interesting people at an advanced security course held at
UNSW. They're not at all related to AI - they're all about hacking -
breaking into systems, and security engineering. I thought why should
we limit the group from enjoying such people giving talks - and my
deliberation on a name change started to crystallize even more.
I would love to know what you all think, and a suggestion of names for
the group would be great too!
I personally love TED talks, if you haven't already done so - have a
look at a few on TED.com - you may get a taste for what I've been
craving.
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. I only like the
Technology out of those 3 names however, as I see the latter two as
side-effects of more general paradigms - which I'll now brainstorm
here:
Technology
Intelligence
Knowledge
Art
Mind
Growth
Collaboration
Heart/Passion
That could produce a rather strange acronym, but I think it's a good
start.
Now - I ask you all for your feedback - please email the list and
share your ideas.

Maybe we can be super-lazy and write a script to generate all
permutations and extract all english-sounding words :)
TEACH is in there too, hmmm...
Hmmm, adding S for Science, maybe PSCIMATEK? (But that drops the G)
