Hi Everyone,

You may have noticed that the http://www.autonomy.net.au/ server is
sometimes very slow, or even irresponsive. The problem is that it's
low on memory. I've save up a little and will be buying 8GB of RAM to
add to it sometime in the next week or so (it's currently running on a
measly 1GB).

That should make a noticeable difference.

If you haven't already, please sign up to the new site!

Looking forward to your responses on Szilard's blog, if you're after
something specific, make sure you let him know in advance, don't leave
it too close to the talk date.

His blog is at http://www.autonomy.net.au/x/9gAR

Nima,

What kind of memory do you need (eg. DDR/DDR2/DDR3)?

cheers,

Keith

Keith!

Great to hear from you!

The memory is this stuff:  http://www.ramcity.com.au/system/20636.htm

The machine has 6 slots, 2 of which are currently occupied by 2x512MB dimms.

I figure, since the machine is capped at a maximum of 16GB anyway, I can add 4x2GB now, and when the price of the 4GB modules drop, replace the 2x512MB with 2x4GB, taking it upto max.

For now though, the 8GB should make a huge difference.

Why do you ask?

I've got a couple of DDR2 lying around (2x512 and 2x1G).  With 6 slots this should bump up your server to 4GB.  Unless you're running a 64 bit system this should help keep your system running respectably. (Plus save you some money as well).

cheers,

Keith

Hi Keith, thankyou for the offer; but there's more to the story with this server...

Because I'm paying to have it hosted, and have little access to it (it's in Perth), I can't get in and out very easily.  Also each time I have to replace memory or perform anything on the machine, I have to pay the hosting company, so I think going the 8GB might be better for the longrun.

In fact I've decided to also add in another HDD as a hot-spare, in case on of the disks in there (which have been running since 2005) dies.

But kudos to you for the generous offer! The group and I really appreciate it :)

Hi Everyone,

Memory upgrade will happen today at 1600 (AU) EST - outage expected to
be no more than 2 hours, and the website *should* be much more
responsive after that, I know some have been frustrated on the wiki
when saving pages etc.

Hi All,

The memory upgrade is taking place as we speak, a good friend of mine
(Sean) is there carrying out the work.

Unfortunately so far we've had only problems, I'll let you all know
how it goes. :(

Woohoo!

After almost giving up - as it failed to accept any of the memory
other than the original 2, Sean tried various permutations of the new
memory (despite the documentation being silent on this) - and we now
have...

9216MB ECC DDR2

Let's see if the new kernel with BIGMEM support boots up :D

Alrighty! It's done, and I'm in...

persepolis:~# grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 9354072 kB
persepolis:~#

Need I say more?

...Well probably, We have all 9GB reading, so server response times
should hopefully now be much better, and no more Java garbage
collection freezes expected.
