Dear 3rd and 4th Grade FRENCH DL Parents,

On Thursday, September 22, 2011 NYC will be hosting the 125th Anniversary Celebration for the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island. The coordinators are considering several groups of children to sing Le Marseillaise and the Star Spangled Banner at the ceremony. Since PS 84 is a French Dual Language School, our French DL students have been extended the opportunity to perform. We are thrilled at the possibility of representing our school community at this monumental event.
Because of the short turnaround time provided by the event planners, we have no time to waste. Please take some time this weekend to familiarize your children with the words and, if possible, melodies to these two songs. Although both anthems will be performed, planners stressed the importance of a spirited and flawless rendition of Le Marseillaise.
We will begin preparing them first thing Monday morning so that the event planners can make their student selections on Tuesday afternoon at PS 84. Due to the small capacity of the island, the group will be limited to no more than 25 children. The island's size limitations will not allow for any parents to attend the ceremony. The children will be accompanied by school personnel.
If our group of children is selected to perform, please be advised that they will be expected to be at school on the day of the performance at 6:30 A.M. to board the busses which will transport them to the ferry to Liberty Island. Boys will be expected to wear navy slacks, a white dress shirt, and dress shoes. Girls will be expected to wear a navy skirt, a white blouse, and dress shoes. The school will provide red neckties for the boys, and red scarves for the girls.
We will be sending all the pertinent documentation and permission waivers on Monday. Please return them fully completed immediately so that we may be ready in the event that our students are selected.
Thank you in advance for your assistance and support in this very exciting prospect.
Sincerely,
Robin Sundick

La Marseillaise
Allons enfants de la patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé ! (bis)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes,
Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Égorger nos fils, nos compagnes !
Refrain
Aux armes, citoyens !
Formez vos bataillons !
Marchons ! Marchons !
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons !
Star Spangled Banner
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
