Good Morning –

Thank you to everyone who participated in last week’s “symbolic last day of youth programs”. The meetings with Councilmembers went exceptionally well and we hope they will have a large impact on this year’s budget negotiating season.

Here are links to some of the press coverage from last week’s event:

WNYC: http://www.wnyc.org/blogs/wnyc-news-blog/2011/jun/08/students-rally-restore-education-funding-cuts/

Sinovision TV: http://video.sinovision.net/?id=2288 (the Chinese coverage was good, focused on the larger picture and affect of the cuts - balanced with the two youth interviews of why youth think the programs are important to them as well as communities.)

Upcoming Advocacy:

§         This week is the YES for YOUTH RALLY from 4:30pm – 6:00pm at City Hall Park. Please see the attached flyer and circulate it around. We need a huge turnout for this event. This event will address all the Youth Cuts and ask for restorations to the budget to support NYC’s Youth.

§         Also starting this week are the Youth Budget Vigils at 250 Broadway and the Emigrant Savings Bank. Everyday a group of teens will be downtown handing out agendas and speaking to Councilmembers about the importance of their programs. Please let us know if you are interested in bringing a group and the DATE you are interested in.

§         Please continue local advocacy efforts!! These upcoming weeks are critical in the budget negotiating process. We need everyone to continue to meet with their local Councilmembers and make sure youth programs are a priority.

Thank you all again for your continued dedication,

-          OST Leadership Team
