The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at Lipscomb University is at a significant moment as it plans for and develops a School of Communication. The new school is envisioned as bringing together scholars, practitioners and teachers all committed to the transformational work of applying scholarship and teaching communication knowledge and practices to students in curricular and co-curricular undergraduate, graduate and professional programs.

The CLAS seeks an innovative, visionary leader to serve as its founding Executive Director for the School of Communication. Reporting to the Dean of the CLAS, the Executive Director of the School of Communication will provide bold leadership, creative strategy, and inspiring energy to move the existing Department of Communication and Journalism to new levels of excellence and success in a changing higher education landscape.

These new levels include, but are not limited to, expanded opportunities in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programming; enhanced reputation, profile, and influence of communication and journalism at Lipscomb University both locally and nationally; recruitment and support of talented faculty and staff; engagement with and support for students; development of a strong alumni network; and participation in fundraising and advancement endeavors. In addition, the Executive Director will administer and manage academic operations in accordance with college and university policies, procedures and contractual agreements and in support of the overall vision and plan of the CLAS and of Lipscomb University.

The Executive Director is an individual with a proven record of leadership success who values the teacher-scholar-practitioner faculty model. The Executive Director will have experience in successful budget management and fiscal practices. Most importantly, the Executive Director must have an unwavering commitment to student learning and student success, and to the Christian mission of Lipscomb University.

1. Evidence of successful strategic, innovative, and problem-solving leadership efforts
2. Effective written and oral communication skills
3. Ability to motivate, plan, organize, and implement initiatives
4. Strong understanding of current and emerging markets in communication and journalism
5. Experience in budget management protocols and decisions
6. Evidence of effective collaborative, interpersonal, and relational team-building skills including effective student relationship skills
7. Strong teaching and presentation ability
8. Experience in developing professional networks in communication and journalism professions
9. Ability to make informed assessments and decisions regarding opportunities for the School of Communication
10. Desire and ability to lead in a fast-paced context of expected enrollment growth, enhanced department reputation, and increased community involvement

Preferred Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate in communication or a closely affiliated academic area from a regionally accredited institution.
2. Experience in higher education with demonstrated success in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and administrative work including budget management experience.
3. Experience with program review, new program development, implementation, and assessment.
4. Demonstrated experience in establishing and cultivating community relationships including relationships with alumni, potential donors, and corporate sponsors.
5. Professional experience in the public sector of communication is desired.
6. Active affiliation with a congregation of the Churches of Christ.
