Nehru Centre cordially invites you to a Special High Energy Physics Lecture by Prof.Abhay Deshpande, Professor of Physics at Stony Brook University (SBU) and Director, Electron Ion Collider Science, Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA on Proton's Spin: From a “Crisis” to a “Mysterious Puzzle” on Wednesday, 9 August 2017 at 5:00 pm. at Nehru Centre’s Hall of Culture, Ground Floor, Discovery of India Building, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai 400 018.

Abstract:

Did you know that despite almost 100 years of familiarity, we still do *not* understand the structure of the proton, the “basic building block" of all the visible matter in the universe? Did you know that contrary to the popular belief of being responsible for the “mass of the Universe”, the Higgs Boson is responsible for less than 1% of its mass? At the heart of these profound truths is the   mysterious “gluon", the force carrier in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory that deals with the Strong Interactions in the Standard Model of Physics.  In this talk I will take you on a journey that will take us from an experimental discovery of the proton’s "spin crisis" in 1988 to its current understanding and then present an exciting future in which we hope to fully understand the “Glue That Binds Us All”.
