"I am deeply concerned with the cases brought against the street and performance artist Danilo Maldonado Machado “El Sexto,” arrested and imprisoned before a December 26, 2014 performance in Havana’s Central Park. This artist was voicing peaceful dissent through his artistic work and exercising the right to freedom of expression that should be afforded to him and all citizens.

Free speech and self-expression are not crimes, and should not be treated as such. The imprisonment of Danilo Maldonado Machado is an unjust response to works of art and the expression of opinion.

Furthermore, the imprisonment of this artist violates globally recognized norms protecting the right to freedom of expression in agreements such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), to which Cuba is a party.

I strongly urge you to unconditionally drop the cases against this artist."
