Minnesota (MN) Genetic
Counselor Practice Course
The Minnesota (MN) Genetic Counselor Practice Course is a six-week online
course designed to provide prospective genetic counselors with the knowledge,
skills and attitudes necessary for professional competence in the practice of
clinical genetics. The course focuses on helping students develop the knowledge
and skills necessary to assess and manage the genetic disorder(s) of a patient
or family, as well as to relate effectively with patients and their families.
The course also emphasizes ethical decision making, cultural competency,
communication skills and professionalism.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Describe the history of genetic counseling as a profession.
2. Understand ethical considerations related to genetic counseling practice.
3. Recognize the importance of cultural competence in genetic counseling
practice.
4. Use appropriate communication strategies with patients and/or families who
have genetic disorders or have been identified at risk for developing a genetic
disorder(s).
