Medical Laboratory Technician, or MLT, is a highly skilled occupation that can be rewarding both personally and financially. With a growing number of health care facilities opening across the nation, there are increased opportunities for employment as a medical laboratory technician.

 

The following information will provide you with an overview of the profession of medical laboratory technology and help you decide if it is the right career choice for you.

 

All medical laboratory technicians have been educated in one of two ways: at an accredited community college or university program or at an American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) approved program. The latter is usually more expensive than community college programs since they meet all ASCP standards. Both types of programs offer instruction in basic chemistry, microbiology and immunology. Programs should also include training in specimen collection techniques, processing procedures, interpretation of diagnostic results and quality control procedures used in laboratories.

 

There are several types of positions available within the field of medical laboratory technology:

 

Medical technologist (MT): A licensed physician assistant who has completed a two-year associate degree program at an accredited college or university. MTs work under the supervision of physicians in hospitals"
