Back in the 90s on the "emotions" album, any ideas what mic they used on, "can't let go". Ive seen a video on youtube in the studio where it looks like a U87(but that may not have been a final version). Ive also heard of her using a C-800.
'91 would probably have been a C-12 into a 1073 onto 2" tape or DASH. Perhaps a 176 or 1176, or a DBX 160 on the way in, and DBX de-essers and 1176/LA-2As on the way out, thru 4k series SSL. It could have been a U87 that you saw, the old ones were actually pretty good for FET mics. It may also have been a U67, which looks very similar but sounds very different.
Why the C-800? You tell me, LOL. I've never had cause to use one for anything, and I've heard some describe this mic as 'brutal'. Perhaps it's good at standing up to the massive amount of processing Mariah's current producers see fit to apply to her voice, while still holding its own in a slammed mix? Perhaps the toaster oven attached to the side of it has a certain charm? I dunno, hip hop and modern R&B guys love those things...
