Floor slip resistance test methods in the USA have historically been created to help sell slippery flooring in the United States, or help wealthy building owners defend the slip and fall lawsuits brought against them when they install polished, slippery floors that cause avoidable injuries. With this latest version of ASTM E303-22, the United States now has a reliable and trustworthy slip resistance test method for the use of assessing the actual real-world slipperiness of floors.

From this search, we get more generalized guidelines which state that based on various standards and studies, the pendulum test value (PTV) over 55 represents a good skid resistance for roads, and over 70 indicates a high skid resistance.

A critical component in the assessment of walkway safety is determining whether the surface is slippery. A tribometer measures the available friction provided by the walkway surface and any contaminants present. Here at Slip-Test, we strive to provide valid and reliable equipment that enables users to conduct friction testing that supports meaningful evaluations of walkway safety.

Our flagship products - the Mark IIIB and the KSS Pendulum - provide reliable measurements on a variety of surfaces, setting the standards for walkway friction testing.

With a firm commitment to safety and technological innovation, Slip-Test is your trusted partner for comprehensive walkway testing solutions. Our devices are mechanical in operation - no batteries, black-box electronics, or compressed gas cylinders to fuss with!

The Pendulum is subject to European Standard BS EN 16165 and British Standard BS 7976, BS EN 13036-4:2003 and should be operated in accordance to these standards and the UK Slip Resistance Group Guidelines Issue 5 (2016). This is the UK HSE and UKSRG preferred in-situ slip test method.

As a fully portable test, it allows precise locations to be slip tested i.e. the site of a fall. The test is reliable and efficient and most organisations find that it can be carried out with minimal disruption to their business.

The Rz Surface Roughness test measures the surface roughness and should be taken in support of a pendulum assessment as it can provide additional information about a floor surface and its ability to cope with contaminants.
The combination of the tests is recognised as providing the most accurate measure of pedestrian slip resistance of a surface in-situ.
All test equipment carries the appropriate UKAS calibration certification.

The Pendulum Test measures the slip resistance of a floor surface by replicating the interaction between a moving pedestrian heel and static surface.
The Pendulum has a swinging arm with a rubber slider attached to the heel of an imitation foot, which sits at the bottom of the arm. The slider imitates the heel of a shoe or a barefoot. When the arm is released, it swings downwards building momentum, before the heel strikes the floor surface. The arm slows in accordance to the amount of friction available and will continue to travel until it runs out of momentum.

A needle will record the point where the momentum is completely lost and determine the amount of friction available to the slider from the floor surface which gives an indication of slip risk. Measurement is given in PTV (Pendulum Test Value).

Pendulum tests are regularly used in court proceedings where slip injury claims are considered, thereby ensuring that the employer/owner can demonstrate a clear duty of care and provision of a safe environment. The key to improving claims defensibility is to build a picture of this data over time, to demonstrate reasonable measures are being taken and processes in place to ensure the safety of all floor users.

Are the power and signal paths through your slip ring assembly correctly wired, and of good quality? Are you also sure that no individual circuits are making unintentional contact? You need to perform static continuity and insulation resistance testing to find out.

The fix? An automatic slip ring tester can help you address these issues by providing sensitive low voltage four-wire resistance circuits for the required continuity and resistance measurements, and high voltage DC insulation resistance measurements between individual slipring circuits or groups of sliprings.

The fix? Any slip ring tester you choose must be capable of measuring for resistive noise. Additionally, it must be flexible enough to operate over the voltage and frequency levels necessary to detect the various noise modes described above.

A good-quality slip ring tester, especially if automated, will help you to efficiently identify any electrical issues. However, slip rings are electromechanical devices and continuously exposed to operational wear and tear.

The fix? No matter how well lubricated the contacts are, wear debris will always be generated; you should clean this out once or twice a year. Also take the opportunity to check the slip-ring contacts and ensure they are following the intended rotational paths. For some slip ring designs, checking for adequate spring pressure may be important; this will help reduce power loss and increase product life.

The fix? You can massively improve production throughput by using an automated slip ring tester. It can measure isolation resistance between every ring at high voltages. It can also measure and report average dynamic resistance of every ring, along with its electrical noise. Measurement values can be automatically reported and logged, while dynamic resistance and noise values are shown as traces. Ultimately, you can reduce manual intervention to zero, while having access to tools like variance analysis to improve product quality.

The fix? You can simplify the burden of both time and personnel by using a tester that can be set up intuitively, with no need for programming skills. It should also be able to generate reports automatically, and offer customisation options for graphics and other functions. Easy communication with third party environmental test systems like climate chambers or vibration beds should also be possible.

At SlipDoctors, we can slip test a wide range of surfaces, including tiles, concrete, metal, vinyl and various other types of floors. As building trends evolve and new and unique materials are used for flooring, slip-coefficient testing is important to consider. All walking surfaces should be tested for DCOF or SCOF levels.

We offer both in-house and field slip-resistance testing services for COF/DCOF ratings. Our knowledgeable and experienced Walkway Auditors can help test your flooring surfaces and help determine how to increase traction.

The pendulum test is essential for anyone who wants to reduce the risk of accidents as a result of slippery surfaces. The test uses an instrument known as a pendulum tester to measure the dynamic coefficient of friction. This is the friction existing between two objects when at least one of them is moving. The value of this measurement is used to determine the slip resistance of a surface.

The pendulum test is performed by swinging a prepared rubber slider across a surface using a mechanical foot. The slider imitates the heel of a real shoe or a barefoot. The foot slows down depending on the level of slip resistance as it makes controlled contact with the surface over a set distance. On the appropriate scale, the pendulum test value is measured.

Equipment: Many providers are equipped with multiple testing machines including the BOT-3000E, British Pendulum, ASM 925, ASM 825 and more. Slip test equipment can be used to test almost any surface, except for carpets.

If a CGC test participant loses his/her paperwork, they can contact the evaluator to ask for written proof of passing the test (a letter or copy of the yellow form) so that a CGC certificate can be requested from AKC.

Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF): Sometimes called kinetic coefficient of friction. This is the ratio of the force necessary to keep a surface already in motion sliding over another divided by the weight (or normal force) of an object. This ratio is a materials property of the two surfaces. DCOF is usually less than SCOF for the same materials. Contaminants such as dirt, water, soap, oil, or grease can change this value. The laboratory values determined by this test method reflect the dynamic friction between the test foot using SBR rubber and the hard surface flooring being tested under specific controlled conditions. No claim of correlation to actual footwear or human ambulation is made.

Unless otherwise specified, hard surface flooring materials suitable for level 1 interior spaces expected to be walked upon when wet with water shall have a wet DCOF of 0.42 or greater when tested using SBR sensor material and SLS solution as per this standard.

The AcuTest, also known as ANSI A137.1 and newer more comprehensive of version ANSI A326.3 are a test method which references using the BOT-3000E, or like tribometer. While there are other DCOF meters available on the market, the TCNA (Tile Council of Noth America) has maintained their position not yet including other devices.

Planned flight testing of a high-energy laser directed energy weapon on a U.S. Air Force AC-130J Ghostrider gunship has been pushed back again to next year. This once looked set to be the service's first operational airborne laser weapon. However, the future of this project is ever more uncertain and there is now a broader review of the Ghostrider's armament suite that could see the aircraft lose their 105mm howitzers in the future.

Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has confirmed to The War Zone that flight tests of the Airborne High Energy Laser (AHEL) on the AC-130J are now set to start in January 2024 and wrap up in June of that year. The goal had originally been for the AHEL to take to the sky on a Ghostrider sometime in the 2022 Fiscal Year. Most recently, the hope had been that this would occur before the end of this year.
