I am excited that the holiday season is upon us as there is so much great holiday music for my piano students. I love incorporating it into lesson plans during these early winter months, because students are able to use their ears when they are familiar with the songs they are learning. They usually set their own goals of showing off their piano skills to their families at holiday parties. This means they practice more. In this post, I will share a few of my tricks for teaching piano lessons during the holiday season, using Finale music notation software to save time and generate ideas.
Other piano instructors told me that they sometimes take arrangements in major keys, and work with their students to adjust accidentals and create a minor piece. I heard about this trick during the Halloween season, and will incorporate it into my own teaching soon. I personally think there is nothing better than a pencil and straight edge when beginning to make these score adjustments with students. However, when finished, I use Finale to create a professional level sheet music copy for students to take home.
Yes, there are things that I wish were easier on Finale. I wish you could swap voices in a partial measure versus a full measure. I wish that ukulele chord diagrams were easier to work with. And while I understand there are third party scanning apps, as a music educator who makes rehearsal and accompaniment tracks, I wish scanning (and improved scanning) had never been taken from Finale. I also wish that Finale highlighted a measure when it contained too many beats for a time signature.
As with other music notation programs, Finale enables users to export music as PDF, MIDI and MusicXML, as well as MP3 audio. The software is compatible forward and backwards, which is ideal for collaborative working and teaching.
For a smaller, cheaper alternative to Finale v.26, there is Finale PrintMusic; this software works in much the same way as the full version and is perfect for creating publisher-quality sheet music. Priced at 89.95, users can enhance playback with VST and AU instrument plug-ins, and share their music as MP3 files.
Many students and teachers also utilise other software in the Finale family. Finale NotePad is another mini version of Finale music notation software that is available as a free Windows download. Finale NotePad is ideal for creating smaller works of up to eight staves, and is compatible with the other Finale family music notation software.

You can use Finale and Scanscore on both Mac and Windows computers. You can also download the ScanScore app from Google Play or the App Store if you are interested in pairing your smart device with your desktop app. This app makes it really easy to take pictures of sheet music with a phone,
Pro-tip: As a final check, have ScanScore play the music back to you using MIDI files. As it plays, you get a helpful side-by-side tracking of both versions. And always remember to save your file regularly to avoid losing any of your work accidentally.

Finale is a very effective and intuitive way to notate music digitally. This program is very user friendly yet has a huge array of tools and options that fulfill almost every demand necessary for music notation. In this tutorial I will demonstrate how to create a straightforward music notation sheet. (This tutorial is done on PC but the process on Mac is identical)
The Playback Region option gives you some options as to where the music begins to play. It is really your preference where you want it to start (default is first measure). I personally use Leftmost Measure as it makes it easier to listen to specific parts of music rather than having to listen to the entire piece every time. Click OK and then click the Play button. Finale will load the instrument sounds and play the music.
Finale is very easy to get used to and is welcoming to newcomers of digital notation, but also has a vast array of options and preferences that allow you to make the most advance sheet music. I encourage you to try out the different tools and mess around with preferences that work best for you. The Amherst Symphony Orchestra (ASO) wraps up its fall season with a program of Nordic music. The concert's centerpiece will be the monumental Second Symphony by Jean Sibelius; but the program will also include the first movements of the Carl Nielsen flute concerto, the Edvard Grieg piano concerto, and the Rebecca Clarke viola sonata in its orchestration by Ruth Lomon. ASO members and Amherst seniors Reid Dodson '24 (Nielsen), Clara Hoey '24 (Grieg) and Grace Geeganage '24E (Clarke) solo in the concerto movements. The Amherst Symphony Orchestra performs in Buckley.
