I've been using licecap in various Super User answers. It's dead simple to use as you can see from this animated GIF image - just extend it over your recording area, hit record, set a save file, do your thing and hit stop. It's free, works pretty well, and seems simpler than most of the alternatives. It's entirely free and has Windows and OS X ports.
On Windows 8.1 and hdpi displays, you'll need to turn off per app display scaling to get it to work normally without turning off global display scaling. I have a walkthrough on it here (Fixed as of version 1.26.)
ALL programs are free, and ALL programs but Easy Graphic Converter are portable. Either you find an alternative image converter (there are plenty; I only chose it, because it was used for the tutorial) or you make it portable yourself by running the installer through the mighty Universal Extractor (I have tested it, it works).
Just one more solution that is usually ignored.You can actually use MS PowerPoint alone to record the screen and create GIFs.This could be useful if extra software installations are not allowed, such as on public computers.
Not sure there is a truly portable program to do this, given the huge difference between the Windows windows manager & the X Windows server used in *nix and Mac. Irfanview is probably the best windows tool to do this.
Then take a screenshot in the normal way, which captures the whole virtual screenin that size as specified by the --panning option. It does also capture those areas which are outside the visible physical monitor area.
The good news: there's a way to capture your pdf in it's entirety.
The bad news: its a bit long winded and the pdf might not come out 100% correct!

What you have done so far is create a web server running on localhost:8888 that is able to render pdfs using JavaScript. You can view an example pdf by going to the following page: :8888/web/viewer.html?file=/examples/learning/helloworld.pdf
Alternatively, you can import a single PDF page into either Gimp or Inkscape. Importing into Inkscape has an additional benefit of being able to edit the actual page before exporting to another format.
To do so open regedit, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Software\Fonts, item LogPixels
and change the decimal value from 96 to something lower such as 80. Then log out and back in and you will see the changes.
I'm using a value of 80 on my netbook and it is about the most that I will drop it while still keeping things (half) readable. You will notice that it really hinders the readability of fonts as well as having some strange bitmap scaling artifacts, but if you're like me and can adjust to it then the extra screen space gained is well worth it.
Before modifying the registry, export the Fonts branch as backup, and also createa system restore point.It might be a good idea to export the .reg file to the desktop when making these experiments,so be able by a simple double-click to activate it and restore the original sizes.
Okay, so in spite of Vinayak's excellent answer - Screenshot Captor - which works great, I got curious and checked out all of the screen grab utils at Gizmo's freeware, including the ones mentioned in the comments section. I've checked around 20 in total so far.
I found only three that I used successfully to grab a window overlapping beyond the screen's visible display. I doubt they're as powerful as Screenshot Captor in terms of grabbing windows with scroll bars, but they're smaller and do the job I wanted:

This question's already been answered, but I thought I'd throw this in as well. NirCmd (freeware, sadly, not open source) can take screenshots from the command line, in conjunction with the numerous other functions it can do.
it can be done without external tools (you just need installed .net framework ,which is installed by default on everything from vista and above) - screenCapture.bat. It is a selfcompiled C# program and you can save the output in few formats and capture only the active window or the whole screen:
hi DU screen recorder is no longer inside google playstore. i tried using mobizen, super screen recorder but they all messed up badly, only can record like 1 or 2 videos before it keeps giving unknown error when u try to playback or share it. what are u guys using pls?
