I have Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 with Lightning 0.9 and Provider for Google
Calendar 0.5.1.

I also have WebMail 1.3.2 and WebMail - Hotmail 1.2.19 with theme
PitchDark 2.0.3.

I have 7 Google calendars that I load, with quite a few events on
them. It seems like a month or so ago when the latest Provider for
Google Calendar update came that it now hangs Thunderbird frequently.

I tried disabling addons and it goes away. I try to selectively
disable certain addons, and it appears that when Provider for Google
Calendar is disabled by itself, I don't get the frequent hangs.

The hangs occur every few minutes, and last for about 30 seconds. I
have the calendars setup to refresh every 3 hours, so I wouldn't
expect any hangs.

I played with the caching awhile ago, and liked it, except it messes
up reoccurring events as I recall, so I've been reluctant to go back
to it until it is no longer experimental.

I have the exact same setup and versions on my laptop, and I do not
experience any hangs at all there.

I'm really at a loss and whits end with this. I completely
uninstalled and removed data application files, and reinstalled
fresh. Still occurs.

Any ideas before I give up?

I have the same problem with 5 Google calendars being refreshed. They
seem to refresh every 10 minutes or so. During that time, Thunderbird
is not responsive. This is starting to drive me crazy also. Any help
much appreciated!

your problem might be related to this thread a couple of days ago:

http://groups.google.com/group/provider-for-google-calendar/browse_thread/thread/fcdca534c04663ff?hl=en#

Have a look further down for this post:

"Another usual suspect for such a cyclic CPU consumption is the
invitation lookup routine that can regularly. You may try to disable
it.
To disable it, edit the configuration (Options/Advanced/Edit config),
look for "calendar.invitations.autorefresh.enabled" and set it to
"false". "

The reply button on the other thread (mentioned below) seems to have
disappeared, so I'll make my comments here.

1) I have tried resetting the options, but they have limited
effectiveness. Provider still trys to sync and makes my computer
unusable for what seems like 5-15 minutes at a time.
2) Setting the refresh intervals to something like 30 or 90 minutes
makes this behavior less frequent.
3) What puzzles me is why this happens on one computer, but the two
other computers I use refresh so quickly with the default settings
that any performance hit is unnoticed.
4) The problem seems partly tied into the size of the calendar. So I
split my personal calendar into long-term and short-term calendars. I
uncheck the long-term calendar so it's not displayed and hope that
this also means it's not refreshed. If I need to see the long-term
calendar, I display it.
5) A better option and workaround until the basic cause of the problem
is fixed would be to disable or schedule sync on a calendar by
calendar basis with a checkbox or preference. This would allow sync on
some calendars in the short term, while others would be synchronized
infrequently, if ever. At least two of my calendars are holidays that
need to be synchronized no more than once a year, if that.

Unchecking the checkbox does not totally disable the calendar, it only
makes it invisible for the calendar views. Alarms and such are still
checked, so you will still have a lot of downloading.

If you want to disable a calendar completely, open the properties
dialog and uncheck "Enable this Calendar".
