Now that Google Calendar supports CalDAV (
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=99358&expand=e02#sunbird
), what is the best choice?

Wow....CalDAV works very nicely indeed. Thanks for the tip, ilarrain.

I don't know how stable the CalDAV support is from Google and what
features are missing to migrate all users from the Provider for Google
Calendar to using CalDAV. If you are willing to help me test, please
do use the CalDAV protocol and try all calendar features that interact
with Google Calendar (invitations, alarms, etc). I would be delighted
if you could let me know if anything is broken that needs attention
(i.e filing server bugs, fixing CalDAV code, etc). Either send me an
email or create a new topic here, please note [CalDAV] in the topic.

CalDAV is working great for me, when Provider didn't at all. Only "problem" I can see is that notifi
cations don't work, but I'm fine with that.

Sam,

How are notifications failing for you? Please make sure you have "Show
Alarms" enabled in the calendar properties, and enable
calendar.debug.log and calendar.debug.log.verbose to see more CalDAV
debugging messages.

Notifications apparently aren't supported, as per the google instructions. So, following the instructions, I turned them off. Seeing as I don't really want them, I'm not bothered.

Ah I see. Sorry about that, I've already mailed the Google folks and
told them to remove that step, since alarms now work but it seems they
have not replied.

I still have trouble with alarms, but here's more info. I use two
calendars - one is strictly a google calendar for personal use, the
other one however is synchronized from MS Outlook using Google Calendar
Sync. It is only with meetings sync'ed from Outlook that alarms don't
work. When I dismiss the alarm(s) it doesn't remove it from the list,
and if I try to "dismiss all" the dialog never goes away, with the
number of pending alarms flickering from 11 to 7 to 3 to 1 and then back
to 11 in an endless loop.

Snooze also doesn't seem to work, same as dismiss.

I'll be happy to provide more debug info if you tell me how. There
doesn't seem to be a calendar.debug.log option in my advanced config.
