I use Thunderbird which now has the Lightning Calendar add-in installed. It's been there for awhile ... it happened automatically in one of the Thunderbird updates I guess. I finally decided to try it out today. The only calendar of interest to me is my personal Google Calendar.

The tutorial I found on setting up my Google Calendar in the Lightning add-on says I have to use the Provider for Google Calendar add-on and then specifies how to set up that add-on. It requires that XML address in order to link to the Google Calendar.

After spending a bunch of time trying to find a way to get the XML address I finally stumbled on a note that Google has discontinued XML links from their calendar as of sometime in November.  Specifically, when I try to get a link from the appropriate settings page in my calendar there are buttons for ICal links and HTML links but no buttons for XML links.

Is there any other way to get the Provider for Google Calendar to link to my Google Calendar without the XML link?  That is, can it use the iCal feed or the Google Calendar API? Or does it only know how to use the XML feed?

As you will have noticed from other posts, in the latest versions of Thunderbird there are synchronization problems with Provider for Google Calendar and Lightning, which often lead to the block of Thunderbird.
Because you only care about your personal calendar, I advise you to use Google Calendar Tab extension only, at least until problems are resolved by the developer of Provider.

Thank you for the tip, Roby.  I'll take a look at that extension. I really only need read/view access in Thunderbird so I'll be happy with anything that gives me that.

Now that I think about it, I might even be able to get view-only access in Lightning without an additional extension. Thanks for causing me to think about it from a different angle!

I tried to use Lightning without Provider and it seems to work well with all calendars, Google or not.
Add a new calendar on left side in Lightning tab, check "on line", select iCalendar (ICS), go to your Google Calendar App, in your calendars select the setting page, click on ICAL icon near the HTML icon, copy the address and paste it on the white space under the task opened in Lightning, go forward and type the name of calendar, select the colour and then OK.
You will have your calendar in Lightning.
