Subject: Making it easier to do business.

Issue No. 464 | January 4, 2013 | Providence, Rhode Island
![]()
Friends,
We are doing everything possible to support businesses and jumpstart our economy in Providence. As part of those efforts, we are constantly working to ensure that when the City does business, the playing field is level and women- and minority-owned businesses have a fair opportunity to secure municipal contracts.
So it is my pleasure to announce that bid packages for City contracts are now available online – making it easier and faster for vendors to learn about and bid on City contracts.
Providence’s adoption of the Rhode Island Municipal Vendor Bidding and Notification System is expected to increase the size and diversity of the City’s pool of vendors, create more competition for contracts and lower costs for taxpayers. The online system also makes the City’s procurement process more transparent.
After signing up with the free system, contractors can find a complete list of bids sought by the City, subscribe to e-mail notifications matching vendors to projects and receive automatic electronic updates when bids are amended.
To protect the integrity of the City’s purchasing process, vendors will continue to submit hard copies of bids in sealed packages to the City Clerk’s Office to be opened before the Board of Contract and Supply. Paper copies of bid applications are still available in the Department of Public Property on the fourth floor of City Hall.
I encourage all vendors to sign up with the new system as soon as possible. Registration is free and only takes a few moments to complete. Simply go to www.providenceri.com/public-property/vendor-center.
For questions regarding the new bidding process, please contact Alan Sepe at 401-421-7740 ext. 300, or via e-mail at as...@providenceri.com.
Face-to-face connections
At the same time, we are working to personally introduce small business owners to the owners and managers of large contracting businesses. Later this month, I will host a women- and minority-owned business enterprise networking event to foster collaboration and connect members of these communties from across Rhode Island.
My administration is committed to ensuring that Providence’s process for selecting vendors is equitable and that the City grows its pool of vendors. As a reflection of that commitment, we have put the City’s bid system online and are working to connect small contractors with larger businesses that may be looking for subcontractors.
The City of Providence looks forward to doing business with more minority- and women-owned businesses in 2013.
Sincerely,
Angel Taveras

SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS:
The Piñata Center & La Tiendita
Sussy DeLeon, an entrepreneur and realtor, opened The Piñata Center & La Tiendita on Broadway in 2006. Perhaps the store’s most delightful offering is its selection of handmade imported Guatemalan piñatas. The individually crafted piñatas are a Guatemalan traditional art passed down through generations.
Designs range from animals and clowns to automobiles and spaceships and are featured at birthday parties, weddings and anniversary celebrations. The Guatemalan piñatas are colorful and break apart easily to spill fun and edible goodies.
In addition to piñatas, The Piñata Center & La Tiendita offers imported clothing, jewelry, coffees and other gifts made by indigenous Mayan women's associations.
The Piñata Center & La Tiendita, located at 300 Broadway, is open Monday through Saturday, from 10 am until 6 pm, and piñatas may also be purchased online at http://www.pinatacenter.com.
