I've got myself into a bit of a pickle and could really use your collective wisdom. I've been locked out of my Windows 10 computer (yeah, I know, should've written down the password) and I'm scratching my head on how to get back in. Has anyone here been through this and managed to reset their password without being able to log in?

I've seen a few methods online involving bootable USB drives and using command prompts, but I'm not super tech-savvy and a bit hesitant to dive into something that seems so complex. I'm looking for a more straightforward, beginner-friendly way to reset my password and get back to my files.

[Edit] A few folks asked me if the problem was solved? Yes. The password was reset with the help of Passcue Windows Password Recovery software. Thanks Jack888 for the recommendation!

If you're locked out of your Windows 10 computer and cannot access it due to a forgotten password, there are several ways to reset it:

Use your Microsoft account: If you use a Microsoft account to log in to your Windows 10 computer, you can reset your password online through another device. Enter your email address or phone number on the Microsoft account recovery page, follow the prompts, and reset your password.

Use a password reset disk: If you previously created a password reset disk, you can use it to reset your password. Insert the disk into the locked computer and follow the prompts to reset.

PassCue for Windows: PassCue for Windows offers different recovery methods such as brute-force attack, mask attack, dictionary attack, and smart attack, depending on the type and complexity of the password. The software uses advanced algorithms and techniques to speed up the recovery process and has a high success rate. From here on:

It has a user-friendly interface that allows even non-technical users to easily navigate the software and recover their passwords. PassCue for Windows is compatible with multiple versions of Windows, including Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP.

Use Windows installation media: If you have a Windows installation media, you can use it to reset your password. Boot your computer from the installation media, choose "Repair your computer," and select "Troubleshoot" > "Command Prompt." Type "net user [username] * " and press "Enter." Enter a new password and confirm it. Restart your computer and log in with the new password.

Please note that some of these methods require prior preparation, and some may risk data loss. For best results, always have a backup of your data and follow the instructions carefully.

Do you have a password reset USB? Resetting Windows 10 password using a password reset USB is a straightforward process that can be done in a few steps. If you've forgotten Windows 10 password, plug the password reset USB into the computer and boot up. When you reach the login screen, click on 'I forgot my password' below the password entry box. The Password Reset Wizard will appear. Follow the prompts, select your USB drive when asked, and you will be guided through the process of creating a new password.

After resetting the password, you can use the new password to log into your Windows 10 account. Remember to store your password reset USB in a secure location for future use, if needed. It's also a good idea to update the password reset disk regularly, especially if you change your password often. This method is a lifesaver for those who frequently forget their passwords and need a reliable way to regain access to their Windows 10 accounts.

You are attempting to reset the password using that command. The only way you can actually change a password is is by providing the old password as well as the new. These are two different operations, and require different permissions.

While logged onto a domain computer (under any account), hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, choose "Change Password". Change the username from the current username to the username of the account whose password you wish to change. Enter that accounts current password, and the new password twice. That should change the password on the account.

Yes, its weird, but technically EVERYONE has the "Change Password" permission on every AD account - this allows unauthenticated users members of the EVERYONE special identity to change the password - as long as they know the current password.

I want to set my windows password using a KeePass generated password. I cannot change the password through the control panel. In order to change my windows password, I have to go to Ctrl+Alt+Delete > Change password. However, this screen does not allow copying and pasting which makes entering a complicated generated password pretty difficult.

The other method would be to ask one of the techs to allow you to open your KeePass database on their computer and use the AD Users and Computers console on their computer to paste your password in. Personally, I'm not sure I'd do that for one of my users because, frankly, there are better, easier, ways to get a secure password.

Unless your enterprise has some weird settings, your password has been able to have spaces for a long time. This means that sentences are a viable password option. Sentences are both easy to recall and can be very, VERY secure quite easily. Just a few words together with proper capitalization and punctuation will meet the requirements of all but the oddest security setup while still being easy to recall and enter.

Very late answer but I found a way to do this so I'm adding this for future users. On the keepass website there are instructions to add a custom toolbar button that only types your password (Note : at the bottom of the paragraph from that link there is an xml file provided that automatically creates the button in keepass).

With this button you can on the security dialog auto-type your old password, then change it in keepass and then auto-type the new one. One warning : make very sure that when you switch to keepass to click on the button the security dialog was the last window to have focus. I had some trouble as I use a Remote Desktop Connection Manager that for some reason sometimes stole the focus of the remote desktop window itself.

Sometimes you only need to type the password, to unlock a previously used web page for example. This trigger provides a toolbar button to auto-type the password of the currently selected KeePass entry.

To enter only a password, select the password field in your application/browser, switch to KeePass and highlight the required entry, then press the 'Pass' button. KeePass will drop to the background and type your password.

You can change your password using OWA ,if you use that ,as Rob said. Then when you are back in the domain and go to login, use that new password and it will authenticate correctly. You cannot change the Password on your laptop at home because it is not connected to active directory at home. (Unless you can VPN into the domain.) Or, if you feel like that time may be approaching, change you password before the weekend and get a jump on it before leaving for home, you need not wait until it expires to change it.

Example: we have configured ADDS and group policy services( We are using window server 2008r2) and whenever user wants to change the password, the user supposed to put dns ip and then they have to change it,and outside domain network also when we try to change the password will be getting error message which says configuration could not be controlled from domain or access is denied, and i have disabled require domain controller to change password policy in group policies as well but still this is not working,Please help me out with this since i am facing this issue from last 6 months
