I have used Prototype.js in Rails up to 4.2, and it worked well there. Goodies like the sortable list and other
Script.aculo.us bits were usable there as well. I didn't try very hard to use them in 5, because by that time I was also working to use Bootstrap, and that was harder to use without jQuery. While it is possible to use both at once, I refuse to do that to my visitors.
It's ironically quite a bit easier to use Prototype in Rails >= 6, because there is no longer a hard dependency on jQuery. And the next Bootstrap will no longer require jQuery either.
As far as the Rails bits, I agree, it would be nice to have some of that back. Perhaps we could start by writing some helpers first, and then extract them out to a gem.
