Advice on debugging protoc plugin

plugin is launched by protoc, is there any guideline on how to debug it with a debugger? 

Do I have to also build protoc myself?

This is actually a gdb question, I didn't have to build protoc in debug mode.

I just needed to do the following in gdb:

set follow-fork-mode child
