This feature request on the GWT issue tracker was temporarily put on hold
more than a year ago. The protobuf issue tracker might possibly be better
suited, so I opened the issue here.

Protocol buffers are even more important today than they were when this
feature was first proposed (back in 2008). Google started work on this
feature in 2010, but put it on hold in October 2011. It would be great if
the Protobuf Team could pick up where the GWT Team left off, or perhaps
both teams could complete it together.

Our research group just received a grant from Google AppEngine Education
Awards, and we are very interested in having this feature. GWT-compatible
protocol buffers would significantly advance several of our research
projects.

I'm interested in this capability and think it would provide value add. Particularly when a team needs to interface something like OSGi based services on a backend server with GWT front end.  If you have protobuf as the serialization method on your back end currently this feature would allow a quicker integration to GWT.  Before spending too much time on this, is this something that is high enough on the priority list that it can be incorporated into the official Protobuf code base or will it remain community maintained?

TIA

This would prove very useful to my dev team, why hasn't this been
implemented yet?

This is out of our scope. Official protocol compiler supports only C++,
Java and Python. Please follow up this issue on the GWT site instead.
If anyone is interested in implementing this compiler, we would be very
happy to provide technique support on the protobuf side.
