Hi all!

Yesterday afternoon I paid a brief visit to the Shrine of the Patriots (昭忠祠) at Mamoi (马尾) and had a walk up on the hill behind the shrine. There I found a couple of large well-preserved Western buildings said to have been the British prisons for confining Chinese criminals, known in the Chinese language as 梅园监狱. The question is, if there WERE indeed some British prisons at Mamoi back in the late 19 century, how is it that I can find not even a single bit of evidence in the English documents? Please help me clarify this issue.

By the way, attached to the mail is an early article about 昭忠祠. Hope you all enjoy it.

George

Dear George:

I have visited the former jail named "梅园监狱" with my Dad 4 years ago.
Frankly speaking, the living condition of the cell might be better
than the average Chinese citzen at that time, except of depriving of
the freedom. However, the former water-prison(水牢) of the basement was
so terrible.

I suppose you had better to look into the history of "consular
jurisdiction (领事裁判权)".

I tend to believe that the jail near the british consulate was exclusively for british felons (or drunk sailors). The Consulate had no jurisdiction on Chinese citizens.  For the other subject do you mean 水槽 or 水牢 ?  There was a need for a "cistern", much more than for a "water dudgeon".

A very similar shot of MaWei panorama is signed by John Thomson in 1870,
but the roof (of the bldg under construction)  is completed.
So this panorama (now preserved in Paris) is probably 1869

to be double-checked

I kind of incline to Rene's view. The problem of such records on the history of Foochow, as well as of the entire China, is that they've often been distorted on purpose by the regime, so often that it's difficult to tell which one is true and which one is not. Any earlier record on that building, if exists, will be helpful.
