there is not direct path that will keep everything that was made on the file. As in all of the styles will be lost. it will give things genetic games in the styles panel, but you will have to rename and check.

the .pdf to indesign solution offered will bring on a lot of redo work since a .pdf does not retain any of the styles. so you will find yourself having to name things again, all of the graphics will be embedded and they will be at the resolution selected per the .pdf settings.

i have used the .pdf to indesign converter mentioned above. i myself found it good for a since page thing. if you have a layout with many pages i went with making the layout myself since there will be a lot fo fix and clean and might as well make a good clean file.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for your feedback. Just to be clear and fair, the PDF2DTP conversion of multi-page PDFs into InDesign can vary from one PDF to another. Meaning, some PDFs, like those professionally created in InDesign or other layout tools, can convert very well. If there are tables with "illegal" or non-standard styling or functions, or custom plugins or the likes, yes, then the conversion can get trickier.

In general though, PDF2DTP has proven to be generally better than starting from scratch. Just check out some of the recent video reviews of PDF2DTP as a starter. And as always, we encourage those who own PDF2DTP to send us in any odd-ball PDFs that they feel should convert better to our Support Line.

Thanks for reaching out. I understand you are trying to open a Publisher file in InDesign. In addition to the suggestions shared above, you can also refer to this similar discussion: Converting Publisher files to InDesign

In short, it can't be done in ID off-the-shelf, but using a plug-in such as Markzware's Affnity to ID converter mentioned by David Dilling in his post. If this is a Microsoft Publisher file, then if you are able to obtain a PDF of the Publisher file, you could then use another of Markzware's plug-ins that is mentioned within this thread, or Recosoft's PDF2ID plug-in.

As mentioned, there is no direct built-in way these days, but there are a few online services that can do that for you. I have used one for a recent file and it was completely effective and cost only $50 for the one conversion. That gave a workable ID file and all the graphics extracted and relinked. If you still need to do what you need to do, shoot me a message and I will let you where i had it done online. (I don't want to seem like I am endorsing any particular company by mentioning them here)

Unless someone pushed MS Publisher to its limits, it's probably faster, and cheaper even in terms of ROI, to just rebuild the document in InDesign. A Word export or the like for any content over a few hundred words as a starting point, and perhaps a day or two's work. It's very unlikely a conversion is going to be press- or release-ready... unless the PUB doc is quite simple, in which case you're back around to it being that much easier to rebuild.

@Joel Cherney : Oooh.. I just tried out the watermarked demo... Not as good as it could be, but I was able to extract some images from an old Pub file, not to mention an old sample PageMaker file with embedded (not linked) images. Some of the images were corrupted, depending on their original format (TIFF seemed particularlly affected) or didn't export at all, but the ones that worked did come through in full resolution, albeit with generic file names. Still, for the price, might be worth looking at if the sole goal is to get the images from these files.

I agree. Although if it comes down to "Time = Money", I was able to save several hours over rebuilding a clients' massive Publisher project by spending $50 to have it converted which got me 75% there.

I would agree! I have been a user of Adobe products since the late 1980s, and there are scores of PageMaker 7 files that I created that would be of help to me now if they could be imported into InDesign 2023. Please give it serious consideration.

It seems ridiculous that Adobe, even in it's current CC2023 incarnation of InDesign, still maintains the import filter for Quark XPress 3.x and 4.x files, but decided to drop the filter for PageMaker. Considering the even wider appeal for such a filter now, it's time to bring it back.

Adobe is acting like they have no competition. Oh wait ...
Come on Adobe!! Thousands of us have been using your products for years but we've been in this business longer than you have. We have tons of files we need to convert and you could help us if you only wanted to. If you knew we could leave to a competitor, you would move at light speed. Knowing we have no options, you are getting lazy and inconsiderate.

Please make it possible to open Pagemaker files! They had been saved in InDesign CS6, and until a few months ago, I was able to open them. I'm unable to find the old version of InDesign to open/convert them so they can be opened in the current version of InDesign. I've owned Adobe products since 1989. I was an early adopter of the Creative Cloud concept and have been a loyal customer, paying monthly, ever since. I'd like to be able to use files that have been "saved" please.

Earlier this year, I could open my Pagemaker files in CS6 - downloaded from Adobe as part of my CC subscription - and save them as InDesign files. But now, I can't download CS6 from Adobe, nor open Pagemaker files in InDesign. As a paid-up subscriber of 5 years, it seems wrong that I can't access files that I created with Adobe products.

Well, those comments all make sense, allow me to add my own cry for help and support here. I have early editions of my guide to the Maldives (Resorts of the Maldives, editions 1, 2 & 3) that I made in PageMaker and though I have the photographs, I cannot open the file of the books themselves. This is a huge shame for archive and historical reasons alone. Just a chance to open, convert and save the files would be so valuable.

And, as others have said, isn't this part of what we are paying for every month? All of that stuff that you provide and promote is great but most of us don't use most of it, as of course you know. This plug-in would be hugely appreciated.

Yes, this is an absolutely necessary feature. At this point it is not even possible to install InDesign CS6 on a current MacOS and InDesign CS6 crashes all the time on an earlier MacOS installed on a virtual machine. Besides, those are old technologies with many known flaws. The only secure thing is for the owner of the file format, that is Adobe, to create an up to date converter and provide it to those who license Creative Suite. Isn't that their justification for renting their software instead of selling it? Keep everyone up to date with access to all of their Adobe software created files?

Dear Adobe,
I have 25 years of PageMaker work that I need access to. I am running Adobe CC, but it CAN NOT open PageMaker docs. I understand that Adobe removed the ability for ID to open PageMaker files,
but PLEASE MAKE A PLUG IN OR PATCH FOR THIS. I understand PageMaker is an ancient legacy program, but there are many people like me that have old work that needs to be accessed. Can you PLEASE provide me with a patch or plug in? If not, can you please give me access to download the last version of ID, so I can convert my files? I have been a loyal Adobe customer for many years, and I am paying for the full Adobe CC subscription every month. I have no interest in going backwards to an older version of ID, but in this case I need to have that older version for PageMaker file conversion.

Our Adobe Plan does not support to open pagemaker files. Earlier days, we stored the design files in cd/dvd's for backup purpose. If we want the file to work back / the hard drive corrupted, we restore the files from cd/dvd's. In this case our older design files in pagemaker version. When we move into indesign, the adobe subscription to allow install the indesign cs6 version. So we open the pagemaker file from indesign cs6, then convert it and stored in the indesign cc version. In 2020, we moved to adobe upgraded program the adobe creative cloud, it does not support indesign cs6. So our older pagemaker files does not open. Please provide a solution for open the pagemaker files (already backuped in cd/dvd) for our work.
