CarPlayis an awesome functionality that I have wanted since it was launched. I have used iPhone since its launch in 2007 and when Apple announced CarPlay I was extremely excited. Recently I purchased a 2016 F150 and unfortunately, the 2016 lineup did not include Apple CarPlay at launch. After doing some digging I found a video on YouTube that showed that I could get this functionality installed on my truck with a simple piece of hardware and while this started me down the right path, I wanted to share my process as I am sure many others have tried and failed due to some of the same issues.

What I noticed was the software version in the video was something long the lines of Version 3.0, and when inspecting my software, I saw that the version was Version 1.0. I read online about how to update, and that the system has the ability to automatically update when connected to WiFi, so when I returned home from work I connected the system to WiFi and waited for a bit. Nothing happened so I turned the truck off and went in to eat dinner. When I came back a bit later and turned the truck on it read that it last checked for updates to Sync on the current date, and approximately an hour earlier. Nothing had changed though.

From there, the system added better App support right off the bat, but still did not allow CarPlay. Looking online, Android Auto would work at this point, however, there is an issue with the stock USB module that came on this model year that causes the Apple CarPlay support not to work. At this point I installed the new USB Module again and plugged in my iPhone and immediately was given the CarPlay prompt screen.

Overall, the process was not too bad, and definitely is better than buying a new head unit, or living without the functionality altogether. The truck does not have built in Navigation, and while it is not something I would have used (built in navigation usually lacks when compared to Google/Waze/etc), having navigation by either Waze, or Google Maps, built into the vehicle is a massive feature. In addition, having access to everything from messages, to the phone, without having to use the phone itself while driving is a huge help.

2) On the Mac, you can use Stuffit Expander. However when I did use it, it failed to extract the entire subfolder entitled SyncMyRide. If you use the standard ZIP file utility in MacOS it will extract all of the necessary files, just not in the correct hierarchy. Luckily on the Ford site they have screenshots showing how the files should appear and it was simply a matter of creating a folder and renaming the files. NOTE: Make sure you use the recommended 8GB thumb drive so there is enough room during the upgrade in your vehicle for the compressed files to be extracted/installed.

4) I was able to order the correct part from my local Ford dealer for around $60. There is a newer part with a -E at the end, which supersedes the -B as stated here. [Correct part number should be HC3Z-19A387-E]

5) Removing the old USB ports was easier than I thought. Use a small jewelers screwdriver (smaller than shown in the YouTube video) and I was able to push in the restraining clip on one side and actually just pull out the part without any further effort. There is not a lot of slack in the cables, so be careful when removing them.

6) I simply plugged the cables back into the new part but did not push it into the slot until I was sure it was going to work. Restarted my truck and plugged in my iPhone and immediately was greeted with the prompt for CarPlay. And voila, it worked on the first try!

Glad it worked! Thanks for posting your experience and the updates. This post was a couple years ago and I wanted to ensure folks had this opportunity because it is so helpful and makes the entire experience better for the vehicle.

There is no app to install, CarPlay is built into iOS by default. The issue is the wiring in the stock dual USB module within the 2016 Fords. If the Sync system is already updated to a newer version you likely will be good to go as soon as you replace the module. Good luck!

I personally have not had any issues since installing this 3+ years ago. I also have a dash cam hooked in and have been through some harsh winters with this setup. I hope that you can find some help with this!

The all-new Frontier design combines aggressive, modern style with elements inspired by the iconic Nissan Hardbody, a truck that burnished its rough and rugged reputation winning off-road races in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the rear, precision lighting features a machined, structural look, with the lamps appearing to clamp to the body sides. The muscular rear fenders combine with the rear bumper for an athletic, uncompromising stance.

In total, nine exterior colors intended for adventure are offered: the new Boulder Gray Pearl, Tactical Green Metallic (premium color), Baja Storm (premium color) and Cardinal Red Metallic Tricolor (premium color), along with Deep Blue Pearl, Red Alert, Glacier White, Gun Metallic and Super Black.

And for an even more aggressive look, the specially-equipped 4x4-only Frontier PRO-4X and new-for-2022 2WD-only Frontier PRO-X feature LED headlamps, LED Daytime Running Lights, LED fog lights and Lava Red grille accents.

The standard 310-horsepower 3.8-liter direct injection V6 engine, which was all-new for 2020 with 93 percent new or redesigned parts, offers best-in-class horsepower1 and is optimized for this application. Torque is rated at 281 lb-ft.

Matched to the engine is a 9-speed automatic transmission, also all-new for 2020, tuned to maximize efficiency and provide strong acceleration. With the 9-speed automatic transmission's wider gear ratio and high-response electro-hydraulic control (versus the previous Frontier's 5-speed design), Frontier's shifts are quick, crisp and offer the driver a confident, direct-shift feel. A larger lockup area helps reduce energy loss and enhance fuel efficiency.

Nissan also retuned Frontier's hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering gear for 2022 to provide better on-center feel, helping to reduce driver fatigue on long trips. Steering gear ratio has been increased by 16 percent, leading to a more enjoyable driving experience with faster response and less steering effort.

Frontier's front and rear suspensions offer best-level ride and handling both on- and off-road. New hydraulic cab mounts reduce road vibration by 80 percent, while new urethane jounce bumpers provide improved damping for a smoother ride over potholes and rough roads, and while off-roading. In addition to a larger front stabilizer bar, a rear stabilizer bar reduces body roll and increases traction. Standard 4-wheel ABS disc brakes provide confident stopping power.

The PRO-4X model adds an electronic locking rear differential; Bilstein off-road shock absorbers; and one front aluminum and three steel underbody skid plates (oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank) for the most fierce of off-road adventurers.

Frontier's towing capacity is rated at up to 6,720 pounds (maximum, when properly equipped). New for 2022 is standard Trailer Sway Control, which can detect sway and automatically apply the brakes to eliminate it for a more confident towing experience. Frontier now also features two front tow hooks in comparison to the previous model's one.

Seamlessly blending with the powerful new exterior, designers gave the all-new interior a feeling of protection and versatility with modern functionality. New trim, finishers and meter accents are inspired by adventure gear.

Added insulation, improved rear carpet structure, and new front-door acoustic laminated glass all reduce interior road noise. Engine noise has been reduced by 5 decibels during acceleration, road noise has been reduced by 3 decibels, and wind noise has been reduced by 2.5 decibels. Each of these refinements combine to create a more comfortable, enjoyable drive experience on- or off-road.

The 2022 Frontier is the first application of Nissan Intelligent Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection and Off-Road Mode3. Nissan was the first automaker to offer Around View Monitor, which creates a birds' eye view by stitching together views from four cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle.

The new Off-Road Mode available on Frontier PRO-4X automatically turns the cameras on when the vehicle is in 4LO, ideal for negotiating tight trails without having an external spotter to avoid potential body scrapes or dents.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Easy Fill Tire Alert and class-exclusive4 Intelligent Forward Collision Warning are standard. Additional available features include Intelligent Cruise Control, class-exclusive5 Traffic Sign Recognition and Intelligent Driver Alertness. Rear Door Alert12 is standard on all models. The all-new Frontier features eight standard airbags.

The PRO-X and PRO-4X grades feature 17-inch painted aluminum-alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, Bilstein Off Road shock absorbers, fender flares, LED headlights, Daytime Running Lights and fog lights, 9.0-inch color touchscreen display, Nissan Door to Door Navigation13, NissanConnect Services powered by SirusXM, NissanConnect with Wi-Fi hotspot10, unique interior treatment and accents and more. The PRO-4X grade also adds an electronic locking rear differential and three steel underbody skid plates.

More than 80 Nissan and NISMO accessories are available for the 2022 Frontier, including sport bar, off-road step rails with removable steps, NISMO suspension system, off-road lighting, OverHaul HD bed rack and tents. Additional accessories are in development.

Built on the expertise of more than 62 years of Nissan truck heritage, the Nissan Frontier has been re-invented for 2022 to deliver on modern midsize truck buyer needs: Power. Capability. Drivability. Utility. Modern technology.

Technology Package: Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, rear sonar system, Rear Automatic Braking, High Beam Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control (PRO grades include Traffic Sign Recognition)
