Christmas is nearly here and the Paddy's gang has got the spirit. For the gang the holidays have always been a time of trickery, backstabbing, and disappointment. But this year they are determined to rediscover the joy of Christmas. Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Dee, and Frank embark on a holiday adventure filled with stolen toys, childhood videos, naked elves, and a bloody run-in with Santa Claus that is guaranteed to blast Christmas spirit all over!
While it's clear that Dennis and Dee's adventure was the A story, dominating more of the screen time, Mac and Charlie had us laughing more. We always knew Charlie's mother was a bit of a whore, but really? Santas running a train on her? An elf? Or at least what glue-sniffing Charlie remembered as an elf. Too funny.
Last year, the good folks at It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia put out the holiday DVD A Very Sunny Christmas, in which they paid homage to classic claymation Christmas specials like Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) with their own sick sequence. Last night, Community took it one step further and did an entire Christmas episode with stop-motion. They were both pretty fucking awesome in our estimation but, like our mom said when she locked us in the punishment closet for getting an A- when our brother brought home an A, somebody is always the winner. A Very Sunny Christmas is not the episode to introduce to someone who has never seen the show. They simply won't get it. Fans will be content, but shouldn't be overly impressed. The extras on the DVD don't really help either. A commentary track wouldn't have taken much time, maybe a script reading as well. Look, it's always sunny, but I was hoping for a special that was a little more sunny than usual.
