to Prospect Park Community Garden
Hi all! Here are my notes from the Friends of Prospect Park meeting at
Adams, March 22, 7 pm. My notes highlight stuff I thought was
important to the garden, plus some important dates.Things got looser
near the end, and I took fewer notes.

Pete Murdock called the meeting. 10 people attended. Brian Robb
(Councilman), Pete (Councilman), Susan Simonds (Adams School), Diane
Carr (YMCA), Grace (Friends of PP), Rachel Blistein (HESNA/Luna Lake),
myself, Kurt Anschuetz (NA leader/water collection/Luna Lake), and
Morgan Cox (EPPNA).

Susan Simonds from Adams School is the adult sponsor of the student
council at Adams. They have been doing service projects, and raising
money for a flowerbed to mark the entrance to the main office. They
have raised $200 for the flowerbed! Some of the service projects they
have done include making cards for veterans. Someone asked whether
they might rake mulch under the swings, once a week.

Diane Carr from the YMCA talked about some of the programs they do in
the park. The programs were very successful this past year, and have
been expanded to provide full day camps. The Ypsilanti camps will run
in the Prospect Park from 6/21 to 7/23, when they will move to
Recreation Park. Dana reported that 80% of the students attend on
scholarship.

Rachel Blistein announced the HESNA potluck ( Apr. 18) and the Luna
Lake Hoedown (June 26). The Hoedown will have at least 3 professional
bands, a native plants sale, activities and environmental education,
as well as food, and some work tasks.

Next, I shared the garden presentation from the workshop, (also posted
on the google group under files) I added a slide with specifications
drawn up based on our workshop discussions and the guidelines that
were communicated to me via Amanda Edmonds last week. Thanks to
Mackenzi for getting that question answered.

Here is the new information that I presented:

Community garden plot location and specs:

26x29 ft. area
9 4x8 ft. raised beds with compost
Wood chip aisles, incl. 3ft. around perimeter.
3 ft. Wooden picket-style fencing surrounding entire area, with gate.
One wooden, painted sign.
Compost bins.
Seating area.
On-site water collection.

Other considerations:

MSDig notification prior to activity.
Signage and water collection to be approved by Parks and Rec.
Sign on-site with contact info.
Filing with Adopt-a-Park (as part of the Friends)
Supervision by community volunteer organization with roles and
responsibilities
Liability through Growing Hope
Neat appearance and graffiti removal.

Here's some of the discussion:

Rachel suggested considering fruit trees as part of the long-term
vision of the community garden. Kurt said he has been talking with
John and negotiating 2 reg size drums for free, for water collection
use. John also has a 250 gal drum for sale. John needs people to help
him plant trees. Kurt brought up that the water collection project
will require many volunteers. Someone suggested for fund-raising that
we figure out the $ cost per plot, and offer individual plot
sponsorships. Grace envisioned a picket-style fence around the garden.
Morgan Cox suggested using social networking sites to promote work
days.

Thanks everybody!
