Subject: [External] 2nd Street Project Update
This message was sent from a non-IU address. Please exercise caution when clicking links or opening attachments from external sources.
Hello interested community members! Wanted to provide a quick update on the West 2nd Street Modernization and Safety Improvement project. We are about to enter the construction phase of the project, which is going to inconvenience our nearby residents and users of the roadway for the next year.
Utility relocations are ongoing. You've probably noticed Duke Energy is going through and taking down all of the streetlights. We are entering a period I'm calling the "Tides of Darkness". Unfortunately, the street lights will be gone until the new ones are installed towards the end of the project in November/December of 2026. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Our contractor, Calumet Construction, will begin construction this April (or sooner) and expects to be substantially complete by December of 2026 with the project. Tree plantings and other minor work may continue into 2027.
There will be several phases of construction that will include full closures of 2nd Street, closures of one direction of traffic on 2nd Street, side street full closures, and lane/sidewalk restrictions throughout the project. The contractor is required to maintain access to all properties at all times.
Once we have a contact at Calumet for you, we will send that out so you can contact them if you have any issues during construction. In the meantime, please reach out to the engineering department (812-349-3913 or engin...@bloomington.in.gov) if you have any concerns about utility relocations or myself if you have any questions about the design of the project.
Thank you,
Kendall
