Lilly,

I remember getting your book back in 2002.  I decided that I would try to call you and see If I could get you on the phone.  Which I did believe it or not.  Like many young rookie's in the business I told you that I had this great story and wanted to get into speaking.  You quickly informed me that many people have great stories and politely sent me on my way.  Well giving up was never in my vocabulary and I decided that I was going to be successful in this business,  I knew that I could because I had a blue print right in front of me in your book.  So thank you for that.

I realize that you only work with Jim Abbott.  Might I ask why?  Mr. Abbott has a great story, and one that I am very jealous of.  Despite his disability he could still play baseball.  With mine, a spinal cord injury, I could not.  Even though I walk, snow ski, golf, play tennis, my body would never fully regain the strength it would need to play professional baseball.  Yet so many people look at me as if I were that amazing athlete.  I am not supposed to walk, let alone snow ski on double black runs, have a single digit handicap in golf.  Yet even despite my athletic achievements, the major sports media outlets, never came calling to want to tell me story.  In your book you write about becoming famous, and how it would help with your speaking career.  This one chapter has been the bane of my existence.  I have tried so hard to get my story told, but because I did not make it professionally, I have had every door shut in my face.  It pains me to know that I have accomplished feats that most can't even begin to fathom, yet my story is still unknown.  Okay enough sob story.

Since you only work with Jim, would you know of anyone who might be interested in my platform  My website is www.joerhea.com

Thank you for everything you have done to make being a professional speaker reality.

Yours very truly,

Hi Joe, your email wasn't address to me but I got one kind of like it last week, from a friend

that was thinking of giving of up on her speaking dream. Below I have posted my response to her.

It may help you and it may not. I believe in what you are trying to do, but I also believe all of us are doing the samething

trying to help others.

In your email you talked a lot about your story, trust me no one cares. 80% of all audiences want to be

entertained. You need to add more humor. While they are being entertained they want to know how they can

make more money. Last on most people's list (and it should be first) is personal development.

Below is the emails I sent my friend,

Good luck and God bless,

Alright Miss T,

                         Are you ready for this?

I'm not sure if I am going to tell you what you want to hear but keep reading.

I'm reaching out because I need some advice, guidance, suggestions, etc.  My dream of enlightening and empowering people has been a serious struggle.

Now if your dream is only to enlighten and empower people, you are most likely not struggling at that. I'm positive you do that every day!

I've tried niching myself with foster care, high school students, and women.

I'm also positive you empower and enlighten every woman, high school student and foster care person you meet. If you want to empower more people meet more people.

 I'm not getting anywhere!

You have gotten a lot further than you are giving yourself credit for. Look at all the people you have already helped and the ripple effect it will have on people they touch.

I'm moments away from chucking it all and finding me a sugar daddy.

Aha! Now we are getting somewhere.

You, just like me and every other speaker I have met and worked with, say our dream is to help others. What we mean is, I want to make a great living helping others just like Les Brown, Anthony Robbins and Wayne Dyer.

We want to be speakers! Stars! We want to be on stage, feed our egos, live in the lime light, and have people tell us how great we are and how much we have helped them. And when we do that the money will roll in!

Not!

We get everything but the money. We spend a lot of money to become that superstar speaker, our ego's get stroked we help people and we live in the lime life but the money never comes.

So after a while we start rethinking this helping people thing. And that's an easy answer we really do want to help people. But we can do that in many ways and they don't cost us as much.

So now we have to be honest with our self's; and ask how much more money do I want to spend to have my ego pumped up and be a superstar?

Besides we spent all this money and went to all these seminars and boot camps on how to make a million dollars a year being a speaker, I'm not suppose to be spending more money, I'm suppose to be making money. a lot of it!

So you give up and quite or start doing your own seminars and boot camps on how to make big money in the speaking business.

Are you still with me?

Any of this sound familiar?

Don't give up on your dream!

Go back to the very beginning and start over. Be more specific about your dream. You want to have a speaking business where you make two hundred thousand dollars a year helping people.

The number one mistake speakers make is they forget or never knew, they are in the speaking business. Yes they are speakers but more importantly the most important thing is; it's a business!

You have to know how to own and operate a successful business. Or go to work for someone that needs a speaker or trainer.

It's not enough to be able to get on stage and give a speech. Not if you want to make big money. You have to know how to operate your own business.

That's a seminar in and of it's self.

There is nothing wrong with not making money and helping people by speaking and doing trainings as a hobby. Just remember hobbies cost money.

A lot of people turn their hobbies into full time business, it takes a lot longer than starting a business but when it's a hobby you don't have the pressure of making money, paying bills and thinking about giving up. You just have fun, feed your ego and live in the lime life.

Now answer me this. Do you want your own speaking business, do you want to work for some company that needs a speaker or do you just want to have fun and enjoy your hobby?

I help people start successful businesses, all businesses, including speaking businesses.

If that's what you want, below are a few things to get you started.

There is so much to cover about owning and running your own business, I barely get through all of it in a two day boot camp.

The first thing I teach people is there are only three reasons to start a business, #1) Make Money, #2) Help and Serve Others, #3) Make Money.

"The purpose of a business is to make money while helping others."

1) The first thing you have to do is figure out how much money you have to start this business.

2) Everyone says none. Then stop trying to start a business helping others and help yourself first.

I tell them they need to work full time on their job and part time on their dream.

3) Now how much time and money can you commit?

4) Be specific and very disciplined with both of these.

5) Schedule the time you will be working on your dream. Tip: the more hours you put into your dream the faster you will see results. Quit watching TV and spending time with dream-drainers, AKA friends.

6) Write down how much money per week you can put toward your dream. We may need to save for a few months to really get started but they are things we can still be doing in the mean time.

7) Write out a business plan, see links below for help.

http://www.business.gov/start/business-plan.html

http://www.sba.gov/smallbusinessplanner/index.html

8) The most important part of your business is your performance, that is how well you deliver everything you said you would in your marketing. The second most important part of your business is your marketing. I believe 80% of your budget in the beginning should be marketing. But every penny I spend I ask myself how this will bring me business, so some things I consider marketing you may not.

You must always be asking yourself how can I reach more people, and not just people although anyone is better than no one. But you want to reach the right people. Marketing is the fastest way to grow or close your business, that's why I spend a whole day just on marketing in my boot camps.

Marketing: you have to be able to express, and communicate how you can serve them and most important the benefit they will receive from that service.

You must do it as quickly as you can and you must do it in a way that keeps their attention if you don't have their attention you can't communicate with them. (Fiji water)

Grab a book and complete 1-7 and send it to me and we will move forward from there.

Love ya,

Brian
