Ok, lets continue.
Making Carbon Fiber parts for Drones or photography rigs on the Shapeoko is very tempting,
I wanted to test a method to cut CF on the Shapeoko with the Dewalt 611 without building an airtight HEPA flltered air management system.
I tested this method first on the Nomad, which doesnt have the airflow issue due to the brushless spindle, and it worked well enough for me to attempt the same method but on a larger scale with the Shapeoko.
I attached the Nomad table to the Shapeoko bed, sandwiching the plastic tub in between.
I applied even pressure to each of the corner bolts and did a quick test of the levelness of the Nomad table with the cutter in the Dewalt, it was level, and I continued.
Hi
I set up my Shapeoko 3 to machine carbon fiber.
I built an enclosure to safely trap the dust. It works extremely well.
If anyone is interested in seeing the enclosure I will up load some pics.
The dust collection system is fairly simple in design but works very well. An inexpensive bathroom exhaust fan that is mounted on the back side of the enclosure draws clean cool air into the enclosure from outside through the vent at the lower right side. It then pulls that air in a path across the cutting area and draws the dust that was not collected by a vac system through the HEPA filter on the back wall. That air which is now clean is sent to cool the vacuum system motor which is in its own enclosure that drastically reduces operating noise. The vac system is connected to the black hose and the cutter bit enclosure to collect the bulk of the fiber dust as it is being created.
@Aaron,
Your enclosure looks well planned, Ive studied your pictures and keep seeing more neat details.
If you ever wanted to do a more detailed overview on your hazardous dust control setup it could literally save lives.
According to Wikipedia most carbon fibers consist mostly of carbon (>99%) with some impurities. If we assume the impurities are from the precursor polymer then it matters what the precursor is. It seems that halogenated products are not used as precursors, so it should be safe.
Just saw a forum where one guy said you need a 400+watt co2 to get through carbon, and another guy said he does it with his 35w. Then they argued about the toxicity of burning pure carbon and I decided to stop reading.
Just curious, what kind of Carbon Fiber are we talking about?
Cloth (just the dry, porous fabric material, not ready for processing)
Prepreg (prepregnated with some kind of resin resin, ready for processing, still flexible)
Cloth and cured resin sheet (cloth saturated with Epoxy or polyester resin, processed rigid form)
Our focus is manufacturing high quality materials that you can count on to perform consistently in high performance applications subject to extreme conditions. All carbon fiber plate you find online is not equal. Material selection and plate manufacturing methods will ultimately determine the material strength and stiffness. We manufacture this plate using high performance materials and high quality manufacturing methods. Backed by years of experience and thousands of hours of research, we remove the guesswork so that you can rest assured you will end up with quality parts at a cost you can afford. These panels leave the mold with a beautiful high gloss surface on one side and a matte finish on the other side for bonding. Made in the USA.
Carbon fiber dust is extremely hazardous. Companies who cut it tend to put the machines in separate highly filtered rooms that move the whole volume of air through the filter every few minutes in addition to very good dust extraction. Operators usually have to wear protective gear as well. They do all this because no matter how good your dust collection is, some dust and chips will still escape. That dust is abrasive and hazardous to your skin, eyes, sinuses and lungs.
I have also seen people cut carbon fiber and other hazardous stuff in a viscous oil bath so there is never any dust. You just have to figure out how to deal with the oil when it comes time to change it out.
That is very similar to CNC routers used for cuting out circuit boards (thats basically fiberglass panels). Very nasty stuff. Those machines are usually fully enclosed units with their own dust extraction. I would not rely on just a dust boot and dust collector like most do for cutting wood.
Our ever-growing manufacturing capabilities combined with our wide arrange of fabrics allows us to create custom Carbon Fiber Plates & Sheets made to order. We also can craft custom composite parts utilizing CNC fabrication, glass lamination and other techniques. Our carbon fiber sheets can be used for accents in residential and commercial buildings, musical instruments, aerospace applications, and automotive accessories.
Has anyone cut carbon fiber sheets in the past? We are interested in building a drone and would like to use the CNC to cut it. Does anyone have experience? Where did you get the bit you used to do this? Do you have any tips and tricks?
I have cut carbon fibre sheet, didnt use any special bits just the one that came with the SM2.0. I dont remember my speed settings off the top of my head but I used a 0.3mm step down and went relatively slow, especially for plunge speed. I went too high on plunge when drilling holes in the plate and it deflected the bed which caused slop in my linear rails. Still havent gotten around to tightening the cam nuts on the rails.
What exactly is included in this kit?
This kit includes the crucial components to make your carbon fiber project a strong success! KIT INCLUDES: 2x2 Twill 3K Carbon Fiber Cloth (you choose the size) and Clear Epoxy Resin and Epoxy Hardener.
I made my purchase through Amazon, the kit is for my cracked Pivot Mach429 sl Race MTB on chain stay. Everything about it was simple and easy. Don't go buy one of those $100.00 overpriced carbon kits, pay close attention to what you are getting. This is just like doing a fiberglass repair.
Easy Composites are the UK's foremost manufacturer and supplier of carbon fibre sheet and carbon fibre sandwich panel. Our dedicated carbon fibre sheet manufacturing facility opened in 2017 to service demand for our carbon fibre sheet products and has a production capacity of 40sqm of high quality carbon fibre sheet per day. The facility includes a range of vacuum presses, platen presses and infusion tables capable of manufacturing single and double-sided carbon fibre sheet, foam core and honeycomb core panels.
All carbon fibre sheet products listed on the Easy Composites website are manufactured by Easy Composites in the UK and are the highest quality available. Our on-site mechanical test facility provides quality assurance and accurate mechanical data for any sheet composition.
Our carbon fibre sheet products are supplied large number of prestigious clients including most F1 teams and high-end manufacturers for use on medical and scientific equipment, speaker cabinets and super-yachts and much more. We welcome OEM/commercial enquiries and can produce carbon fibre or composite sheet to any specification.
Made from a combination of 6K 22 twill weave and 12k unidirectional carbon fiber fabric, this product is 100% genuine carbon fiber. Both sides have a textured matte, allowing it to bond to any surface using our 3M high-performance double-sided adhesive. This sheet can be cut with standard dremel tools, but we recommend carbide, bimetal or diamond coated cutting tools.

These first quality carbon fiber sheets have a deep, glossy, three dimensional finish. The proprietary Autoclave process, 100% genuine carbon fiber prepreg (not a printed vinyl), and superior epoxy resin consistently deliver high gloss panels with outstanding strength, durability and a longer lasting mirror-like finish.
Applying the adhesive backing yourself can be a tricky process. We apply a high quality adhesive backing to the carbon fiber sheeting in-house, using a cold laminator. The cold laminator provides a superior bond between the adhesive and the carbon fiber sheet. And the risk of handling an adhesive is eliminated.
Prior to applying the carbon fiber sheet, clean the surface to which the sheet will be applied. It is important to have a surface free of oils, grease and debris that could interfere with the adhesive.
When ACP Composites takes on a project, we know just how important every step of the production process is for your project. From preparing the project to adding final touches, you can be assured that your product will be handled with the utmost quality and expertise.
