The new PDF-XChange Editor - successor of the legendary PDF-XChange Viewer - now has the option to edit PDF documents and much more, in addition to all the popular Viewer features...

PDF-XChange PRO offers all the features of the Standard version and comes bundled with our flexible and extensive all purpose tool for PDF creation and modification - PDF-Tools. Combine this with our award winning PDF-XChange Editor PRO (which is included in this license) and PDF-XChange PRO is just about as good as it gets.

The core function, the generation of PDFs, dominates the program and creates quality PDF output. Like the standard version of the PDF-XChange, the PRO version of the program uses a virtual printer that produces a PDF from any application.

I don't know when it began, but suddenly DO is slow showing files in lister on first run. After a reboot (and DO autorun) it took up to 5 seconds until dirs/files in lister are shown (the active tabs are local SSD devices). When closing and reopen DO is fast as usual.

It's most likely a PDF-XChange issue, since no query Opus makes into a shell extension should cause that kind of delay unless there's something wrong with the shell extension or the query is asking it to look at a slow resource (which would probably affect other shell extensions, and can probably be ruled out).

Maybe you didn't notice, because if you don't open DO for a while on first login (after reboot) you won't see any difference. I tested it on 4 devices, behaviour on all is the same and after uninstalling shell-extension, everything is ok again.

The Column and Properties sheet handlers both accomplish the same thing, but one is the "legacy" version of the handler. With regards to Windows explorer, the "Column handler" is for windows Vista and Up, while the "Properties sheet handler" is for everything prior. We still offer both however as some 3rd party applications make use of one or the other, and we cannot discern which they will need. All that this accomplishes is offering some additional information in the columns of these applications, such as the PDF specification of the file.

I had a quick look and was able to reproduce the problem and make a process dump during the delay, which happens when their XCShMain.x64.dll is loaded in response to us calling their IColumnProvider::Initialize.

(Although the exact rules about DllMain from Microsoft are frustratingly vague and boil down to "do as little as possible", a deep stack trace ending in a CreateFile call seems potentially wrong. I obviously can't see their code to know exactly what it is doing, though, so this is just a guess and it may in fact be fine.)

Yes, its stored in globalprefs.oxc, but the globalprefs.oxc not within DO-prefs-backup-file. After restoring Windows the old globalprefs.oxc (not including the context-value) was restored. So I wondered I had to enter the value again.

If even reading a local drive like C:\ is slow, it's probably something you have in your toolbars which is taking a long time to evaluate when the toolbars are refreshed (which happens each time the folder changes, among other times).

If clearing the favorites list is what fixes things, it's probably going to be an entry in the list that's pointing to something that is no longer (or not always) there, and which takes Windows a long time to give up looking for. (Inaccessible network drives can do that.)

It could also be tied to the Jump List settings, which are configured to add all the favorites to the jump list. I'm not sure if jump list would be reevaluated on every folder change (at least with the other settings in play) but it could be involved. But maybe you already tried turning all of that off. (Windows will only show a maximum of about 10 items on the jump list anyway, although it doesn't provide a way for us to know when we add items.)

If you still see the problem, it might be worth creating a Process Monitor log of what happens when changing folders. That should reveal what is being accessed, assuming it is triggering some kind of filesystem activity. It may also reveal which part of Opus, or potentially a 3rd party shell extension, is causing the access/delay.

*The link you want on the ShellExView page is "Download ShellExView for x64". Extract it to wherever is convenient, then run the exe and sort the list of extensions by name to find all the entries related to XCShInfo.x64.dll

Setting Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced [Compatibility]: flush_com_libraries = False may also reduce the frequency that the delay is triggered, by allowing their DLL to remain loaded for longer, but would not fix things entirely. Their DLL is taking a ridiculous amount of time just to load each time it is called. (Whether it is actually a fault in their DLL, or something else, I can't say. Updating or reinstalling the related software may repair things.)

For example, it takes several seconds for the folder shown below to be listed, every time it is displayed. Other folders with fewer or even many more items on the other hand appear without delay in a fraction of a second.

You have PDF-XChange installed and parts of it enabled in your screenshots. Try completely uninstalling it and rebooting. If you no longer see the problem, then it's related to PDF-XChange and you should chase them up about it. OTOH, if you still see the problem, please start a new thread with details.

For some time, I've been somewhat irritated by slow displaying of the first folder displayed after booting the system which I tend to do daily. It didn't seem to matter what folder. Whatever one was first accessed. After that things would be OK until the next system boot.

I'd see Reading Folder, I think it was, along with the moving green bar. It was a minor enough problem that I hadn't bothered to do anything about it, but today I decided to spend some with ShellExView. I was somewhat doubtful that I'd find anything, but I did.

For whatever interest it may be, disabling PDF XChange Columns Extension, part of PDF-XChange Editor by Tracker Software has eliminated the undesirable behavior. Whether doing so will eliminate anything else I care about remains to be seen.

I have never tried PDF XChange 3 you mentioned above. But I am testing another PDF Processor these days. I want to check whether it can work well with its PDF printer. Do you have any ideas about it? Or any good suggestion? Thanks in advance. And I will try PDF XChange 3 later.
