Tina Louise perfectly portrayed the bombshell starlet, though she was not exactly enamored with the role. In subsequent spin-offs and sequels, other actresses stepped in to play Ginger. Initially, in that pilot, Kit Smythe filled the role, though as we have noted the character was a secretary. After Louise stepped away from the island forever, she was replaced in later TV movies by Judith Baldwin (Rescue from Gilligan's Island, The Castaways on Gilligan's Island) and Constance Forslund (The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island). In the 1974 animated series The New Adventures of Gilligan, Jane Webb voiced Ginger, while in the 1982 cartoon Gilligan's Planet, Dawn Wells handled both Mary Ann and Ginger!

Just where is the island exactly? Three somewhat specific locations are given throughout the three seasons. In "'X' Marks the Spot," the island's position is said to be approximately 140º latitude by 10º longitude. (Which are impossible coordinates.) Later, in the episode "Big Man on a Little Stick," their position is stated as approximately 110º longitude by 10º latitude. (Assuming that to be negative 110º, that would put the island a ways off Mexico's Pacific coast. Finally, in "It's a Bird, It's a Plane," the U.S. Navy spots Gilligan flying over the island in a jet pack. They give the location as 250 miles south of Hawaii. So, 10º latitude, -140º longitude would make the most sense for that location.
I got problem with my GI. I got the "Island Error" message and cannot play at all! I checked a few forums and advice but unfortunately no luck. The switch edge test seems ok, motor and opto as well. However when I run the "motor test" the first stop seems a bit off. What I mean the alignment between the ramp and the "first" island path is off. But after a complete cycle the next time it is ok, no matter how many times I run the test. Always stop at the correct position... No other fault indication or other issue on the switch matrix
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!
Thank you for the help and time in advance!
Check to make sure your opto is registering every time, every stop. We had a GI where the opto was "seeing through" the plastic. Putting some electrical tape on the bottom edge all around the island fixed that. But it shouldn't be giving you errors. What happens when you do a factory reset?
Frank and I took Day Tripper over and hung out in the water, avoiding the land where the mosquitos were happily feasting on slightly inebriated humans too oblivious to notice. It was a great place to people watch and the current through the inlet kept the water moving and cool. Truly a pretty island and a fun place to while away a bit of time.
Wells, a former Miss Nevada, made many stage and screen appearances after her pageant days, but it was her stint on the famously popular sitcom -- which saw seven castaways stranded on a deserted island after a three-hour boat tour gone awry -- that cemented her pop culture status.
Another opportunity Wells missed out on while they were filming was an off-screen, on-island romance. When Rosanna Scotto asked her if she ever was romantically involved with anyone in the cast, Wells said that she and Russell Johnson, who played the Professor, had a special connection, but they could never hook up because they were both married. "I could have fallen in love with the Professor in a minute, but we were both married ... He was darling and he was handsome; he was the funniest one on the show," she said.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article inaccurately transcribed Wells' remarks, omitting the world "million" from the figure earned by the show's producer. But $90 still goes a long way on a desert island.
To add insult to injury, Gilligan, the skipper, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the professor, and Mary Ann have no music on the island! They remembered everything else for their three-hour tour; Mr. & Mrs. Howell remembered to bring martini glasses and bundles of cash, and the movie star remembered trunks of clothing and jewelry, but no one onboard remembered to bring records and a record player - a tragic oversight! The professor did remember to bring a transistor radio, but its reception on the island was weak and staticky.
The 98 episodes invariably involved their efforts in vain to get off the island, even as a parade of guest stars dropped in and had no trouble getting out. The show drew the wrath of critics but its innocent fun caught on with viewers at a time of tumult in America after the assassination of a president and during the rise of the civil rights movement and the escalation of the Vietnam War.
He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a B-24 bombardier on missions over the Pacific war zone, breaking his ankles in 1945 when his plane was shot down over the Philippine island of Mindanao. He was discharged as a first lieutenant in November 1945, having earned a Purple Heart and other medals.
Johnson, from northeastern Pennsylvania, served in World War II before pursuing an acting career. Beginning in 1951, he acted in TV shows, westerns and sci-fi movies, including "It Came From Outer Space" and "Attack of the Crab Monsters." He's most associated with his role as Professor Roy Hinkley, whose inventions out of rudimentary materials solved problems he and his six shipwrecked mates faced on the South Pacific island. Though the comedy only aired for three years, from 1964 to 1967, it has been shown in reruns continuously since.
Steve Stolee, a longtime island director and actor who performed alongside Johnson in Buxton's production, also directed the World War II musical "The Recollection of Flight" by local playwright/composer Paul Lewis. It's about a pilot whose brother was killed during fighting in Italy. Stolee thought Johnson would be perfect for the role of the now-older man telling the story.
