Back in 2018, Maji Curry made waves by winning the annual Kanda Curry Grand Prix. Since then, the brand has expanded beyond Japan, making its way to countries such as the USA and Thailand before finally arriving in Singapore in 2022.

We started with the Hamburger Steak Cheese Sauce Curry Rice (from $14.30++), which is the dish that earned Maji Curry the Kanda Curry Grand Prix. It arrived in a large oval plate featuring a sizeable mound of rice and hamburger steak surrounded by curry, as well as a small pan of cheese fondue.

Aromatic, piquant, and with a good sweet-to-spicy balance, the curry here had more depth of flavour than your average Japanese curry. And when combined with the creamy, savoury cheese fondue and fluffy rice, each spoonful was a blast to consume.

Signature menu items include Omelet Curry with Pork Cutlet and Omelet Curry with Hamburger Steak, served with or without creamy cheese sauce. The first, partners the joy of crunchy, fatty pork with a fluffy, rice-filled egg pillow. Seasoned beef patty, meanwhile, has a gentler texture but all the meaty, savoury goodness carnivores crave.

Serving a celebrated version of an iconic dish, Maji Curry delivers a cultural experience on every plate. Instead of travelling the world in search of the perfect Japanese curry, you can thank founder Ken Takagi for putting in the time, then bringing his award-winning creations here.

Competition is stiff in the Kanda area, as there are more than 400 curry joints there. Maji Curry made its presence felt just seven months after opening when it won an annual curry festival, called the Kanda Curry Grand Prix, by popular vote among a crowd of 40,000 attendees. The brand now has three outlets in Japan, one in Thailand and another upcoming restaurant in LA.

Thin slices of pork belly, kissed with a sweet-savoury combo of shoyu and mirin are sufficiently tender and quite enjoyable on its own, though we find its delicate flavours disappear into the curry when taken together.

Ordered Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet) Cheese Curry ($18.30) as best selling flavour as the hamburger (beef). I felt that their curry is slightly spicy (level 1 only) compared to some of japanese curry shop. But then it's not jelak as I thought that and I almost managed to eat finish. But then the cheese taste is not as strong as I thought as its quite milky and creamy texture. Pork Cutlet is really crispy and crunchy but a lot of "fat" and batter hidden inside.

I didnt wanted to get their salad and drink set tbh. But then the staff suggested that getting the set is more worth it than getting ala crate version. The salad still ok but drink (green tea) taste really weird ?.

A fan of stew-like, comforting Japanese curry? Joining the likes of popular curry chains Monster Curry and Coco Ichibanya is Tokyo import, Maji Curry. The 22-seater restaurant (which has indoor and alfresco seats) will open its doors in late March at Square 2 shopping mall, Novena.

Maji Curry is a relatively young eatery, having been established by founder Ken Tatagi (also CEO of Sunpark) in April 2018 in Kanda-Ogawamachi, in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo. A bold move, considering the Kanda area houses more than 400 curry restaurants.

For a sizzling treat, try the Hamburg Omu Curry Rice ($20) showcasing a generous Japanese pork and beef hamburg patty, grilled to perfection and seasoned lightly to highlight the natural flavors.

To elevate the experience even further, diners can opt for a mouthwatering addition of Mozzarella Cheese Fondue for just $4, adding a creamy and satisfying finishing touch to the already delightful curry sauce.
