Cars Race-O-Rama is a racing adventure game in which the player controls Cars protagonist and Piston Cup racer Lightning McQueen. The game features five nonlinear open worlds, including Radiator Springs. In each area, McQueen can participate in multiple race types, including circuit races, relay, and point-to-point. Some events allow the player to control other characters, such as the forklift Guido in events known as Guido Kart. During these events the player participates in combat racing similar to that found in the Mario Kart series.

Lightning McQueen and the Doc Hudson Racing Academy are in a race competing against a rival academy. At the end of the race, the members of the other academy crashes the Doc Hudson Racing Academy. Lightning witnesses this and they reveal that they are from the Chick Hicks Racing Academy. Chick appears and tells Lightning that he plans to win the Race-O-Rama series to shut down the Doc Hudson Racing Academy, thus bringing more cars to his academy, and take over Radiator Springs, and Lightning will no longer be allowed there. Lightning Accepts the challenge, before then immediately calling Chick "Thunder", "'cause thunder always comes after Lightning!" Chick then states that he doesn't know why he keeps falling for that one.

Meanwhile, in Ornament Valley, in front of the Rustbucket Stadium, Mater meets his old rivals, Bubba, Tater and Tater Jr., who reminded him of when they agreed a long time ago to race in the Rustbucket Stadium for the towing rights to Radiator Springs. Throughout the story, the Taters slowly got along with Mater and slowly became friends with him.

Lightning McQueen arrives at Santa Carburera with Doc's students and a few of his friends from Radiator Springs. After the first two races, Lightning and Flo line up at the starting line for the third one when Chick shows up and introduces them to Candice. Candice loses the race, despite being promised by her dad that she would win, so she calls him and asks him to buy a bunch of new car parts for her, to which he agrees. She drives away to go shopping.

For the next round, Lightning arrives in Autovia with the students and Sarge. Meanwhile, Chick's students went through the MotorCo. building, where they became VINs, robotic cars who speak in a monotone voice. Lightning, the students and the VINs did two races around Autovia. Before the final race, Lightning and Sarge are introduced to El Machismo, an off-road racer. El Machismo loses the races, making him angry, and blames it on Chick and MotorCo., and demands for bigger car parts. Even Chick had to admit that he was not that much of a sore loser.

After that, Lightning gets new modifications again goes to Motoropolis City for the next round. The races occur at night when the city is full of bright lights. Before the final race, Chick introduced Stinger, who is shown not to talk much, to Lightning and Ramone. Lightning was able to win this race as well, much to Chick's anger, who was quite sure that Stinger, being a muscle car, would win. He asked Stinger what he had to say for himself, but Stinger said nothing, instead just driving away in anger. There is only one more round left in the Race-O-Rama series and Chick still has more surprises.

In Radiator Springs, Mater, Bubba, Tater and Tater Jr. have their race in the Rustbucket Stadium. Mater wins the race, much to Bubba's anger. On the contrary, Tater and Tater Jr. had fun, saying that making friends with Mater, whose name also rhymes with theirs, makes them feel like winners too. Bubba drives away, vowing his revenge.

Lightning McQueen and Chick Hicks go back to Radiator Springs Speedway for the last round in the Race-O-Rama. Lightning has one more race against Candice, El Machismo, Stinger and the VINs before the final race with Chick. Chick decides to use the same modifications Lightning used during the earlier rounds, but Lightning modifies himself again with modifications he was saving for this special occasion. Right before the race, Chick reveals that he was only using Candice, El Machismo, Stinger and the VINs to learn how to beat Lightning.

Lightning wins the race and the Race-O-Rama trophy, which makes Chick angry. He claims he could have won if he raced in the Race-O-Rama by himself. Lightning tries to teach Chick that there is more to racing than winning and that the best racers are part of a team, but Chick does not listen and drives away, vowing his revenge. Later, Candice, El Machismo and Stinger show up to apologize to Lightning for their past behavior. Lightning accepts their apology and invites them to come to the Doc Hudson Racing Academy any time.

Been doing some backlog, wasn't planning this but my son put it in and so I finished it. Apparently, it took me 11 years and months to complete. Took another day because of that Pluggin' away trophy. I tried to do what was suggested to get it but it looked like I had to play the main races again to get that triphym. Weirdly, I got the plugs in one race but it didn't pop but in another it popped even though I got them on my first playthrough. Saved me from having to do all of them again.

In the game, players race against new characters through action-packed tracks to win the Race-O-Rama trophy as their own personalized Lightning McQueen. Players can join Lightning McQueen in Radiator Springs as he prepares Doc Hudson's racing academy of student racers for the Race-O-Rama competition. Lightning finds out that his rival Chick Hicks has his own set of academy student racers who do not always compete fairly (as shown during the crashing of two of Doc's students during the intro race). Lightning decides to customize himself for the four different races: off-road racing, street racing, beach racing, and speedway racing.

Throughout the game, Lightning travels to several different locations for the Race-O-Rama, including the coastline town of Santa Carburera, the old western town of Autovia, and Motoropolis City. In each location, he is introduced to one of Chick's protégées, Candice, El Machismo, and Stinger, each of whom are said to be very experienced in their respective location, but also do not race fairly. Despite this, Lightning manages to beat them in each race.

The game also has a sub-plot involving Mater racing against Bubba, Tater and Tater Jr. for the Rustbucket Stadium and the towing rights to Radiator Springs. Throughout the game, Tater and Tater Jr. were gradually befriending Mater. Eventually, Bubba and the Tater's lose the race, much to Bubba's disappointment. However, Tater and Tater Jr. felt like winners, since the real winner, Mater, became their new friend.

After McQueen beats Stinger, Candice, and El Machismo, Chick reveals in the final race that he was only using them to learn how to beat Lightning and customize himself. After Chick loses the race, he vows his revenge on McQueen by saying that he will come after him when he least expects it and drives away in anger. Then, Candice, El Machismo, and Stinger apologize to McQueen for the way they acted during the races. McQueen accepts their apology and invites them to stop by the academy anytime.

After the events of the original movie, Lightning McQueen now teaches a new generation of racers at the Doc Hudson Racing Academy. During a practice race, Lightning and his students are confronted by old rival Chick Hicks, who now runs his own racing academy. Chick and his students challenge Lightning to a series of races across the country, culminating in a grand finale back in Radiator Springs.

Cars: Race-O-Rama contains examples of:

  • Abandoned Mine: The one in Tailfin Pass makes a comeback with an additional tunnel added in.
  • Ability Depletion Penalty: Fully emptying the boost meter causes it to recharge slower than it would normally.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
  • Radiator Springs and the surrounding areas of Ornament Valley and Tailfin Pass return from previous games as one large, connected map with a few new areas to explore, such as additional tunnels in the Tailfin Pass mines and Sarge's Boot Camp.
  • The Radiator Springs Stadium from the previous game returns as a fully explorable area, when it could previously only be visited during certain races.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Characters like Mater, Sheriff and Guido are playable in their own special races and minigames.
  • And Your Reward Is Clothes: In addition to the series-usual alternate paint jobs for each character, you can now unlock new parts such as hoods and spoilers to customize Lightning's design even further.
  • Boss Banter: Opponent racers love to brag as they pass you, and Lighting is quick to do the same.
  • Bottomless Fuel Tanks: A common element of Cars games.
  • Canon Foreigner: New to this game are Chick's new sidekicks Candice, Stinger, and El Machismo, and a group of identical robotic cars called The VINs. Several original characters from the other games also make cameos.
  • Collection Sidequest: Finding all the paint jobs and kit parts hidden each of the explorable open worlds.
  • Continuity Nod: Lightning McQueen's Racing Headquarters and the Radiator Springs Stadium from Mater-National Championship are still around. The latter has even been revamped for this game.
  • Crate Expectations: Crates and barrels can be found littered all over the place, though they serve no real purpose aside from just being fun to knock around.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: VINs, who started out as Chick's students, lose any sign of personality they had after their transformation.
  • Demoted to Extra: Though they weren't particularly major to begin with, Mia and Tia go from NPC racers to only appearing in the background of the Photo Op minigames.
  • Eternal Engine: The huge Motor Co. factory in the center of the Autovia desert. It's even shaped like an engine!
  • First-Person Snapshooter: Paparazzi missions have you pull off impressive jumps as Lightning (or other characters in arcade mode), then switch to the perspective of a photographer to get a picture of them in midair.
  • Follow the Money: Collectible lightning bolt pickups show up all over the place while in free roam, sometimes leading the player down new routes.
  • Mecha-Mooks: The VINs, students of Chick's racing academy transformed into identical white robot cars.
  • Metropolis Level: Motoropolis City, home of the tuned-up muscle car Stinger.
  • New Work, Recycled Graphics: While the graphics have certainly evolved from the first two games, there's still many assets recycled from those games.
  • Nostalgia Level: The original maps from the first Cars game return here, with just about all of the familiar landmarks intact.
  • Now, Where Was I Going Again?: Averted. Unlike in the previous two games, the pause menu now conveniently tells you where to go between races.
  • Palmtree Panic: Santa Carburera, a lovely beachside town complete with a boardwalk and ferris wheel.
  • Pre-Character Customization Gameplay: Lightning McQueen's alternate parts have to be unlocked, so the player has to do a race or two with his default design to start off.
  • Product Placement: The Mack Track Challenge minigame is based on a real-life toy of the same name. It's even advertised on the back of the game's box!
  • Racing Minigame: Even though the entire game is about racing, it still manages to work in one of these by way of Guido's Mario Kart-style "mini-car" races, compared to the (relatively) realistic mechanics of the rest of the game.
  • Sore Loser: Candice does not take losing to Lightning that well. Neither does Stinger nor El Machismo, for that matter (even Chick says he's not as big a sore loser as him!).
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Chick's students being turned into robots is never brought up again once it's introduced.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Like in the other games, deliberately crashing into NPC cars causes them to say something along these lines.
  • Where It All Began: The first race and the final showdown with Chick take place in the same stadium.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The locations of Autovia and Motoropolis are not specified. Santa Carburera in particular, seems to be this universe's version of Santa Monica.
