If you're on the fence about splitting from Netflix, here's how to decide which subscription to nix. Plus, a list of free streaming alternatives to Netflix that will save you even more money, 10 ways to save money on streaming, and an app that can help you get your subscriptions in order. Want more? Here's CNET's guide to finally cutting the cord. And here's how to cancel Disney Plus and how to cancel Amazon Prime.

To cancel your subscription, go to netflix.com/cancelplan and sign in with the email address and password you used for your account. Once you're signed in, you'll have two options. You can cancel your account but keep using it through your next billing date, or you can downgrade your plan to save some money each month. Here are all the Netflix plans compared.

When you cancel your subscription, Netflix will keep all information linked to your account for 10 months. That means information such as your viewing history, account profiles and favorites will still be there if you decide to restart your subscription within that time.

It makes sense that Netflix would hold onto this type of information, but if you want to have all of your personal data deleted prior to the end of the 10-month period, you'll need to take an extra step.

More specifically, you'll need to send an email to "pri...@netflix.com" using the email address that's linked to your Netflix account. Netflix will not accept requests from a different email address that references the email linked to your account. It has to be from the same address.

If you don't want to have your information deleted early, but you share your account password with someone else, it's a good idea to change your password after canceling your subscription. That way, whoever you share your account with doesn't log into your account and restart the monthly fee.

Still looking for ways to cut subscriptions? Read how to cancel and then delete your Amazon Prime account. It involves more work than Netflix. Same goes for your Google account, should you be ready to get the search giant out of your life.

Netflix on Tuesday said it would be sending an email to U.S. subscribers who share passwords with people outside their households. The notice will come with a warning: "Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with."

Users who want to share Netflix with someone who lives outside their household can either "buy an extra member" for an added price of $7.99 per month, or they can transfer existing profiles to new memberships.

The announcement in January that Netflix would no longer allow users to share their passwords broadly roiled its fan base. The strategy revealed a 180-degree shift for the streaming company, which once encouraged password sharing as a way to attract more viewers.

Netflix will likely use a person's geographic location, as determined by the IP address of any internet-connected device, to determine which people count as "household" members who live together, Insider reporter Sarah Saril told CBS News earlier this year.

Sharing a Netflix account with someone else outside your home? You're not alone, and Netflix isn't happy about it. The company is now charging its account holders $7.99 for each additional user.

In a detailed letter to shareholders last month, Netflix explained the plans for a broad rollout, including the U.S., as one that will grow the paid membership base, therefore increasing profits, rather than reduce these metrics.

Netflix began sending an email to account holders with a membership that is being shared with someone outside of their household. In the email, the company explains that users outside the member's household will have to either get their profile transferred to a new paid membership, or the account holder can have an extra $7.99 added to their monthly bill to continue sharing.

Paid sharing was rolled out in the first quarter of 2023 in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal. "In Canada, which we believe is a reliable predictor for the U.S., our paid membership base is now larger than prior to the launch of paid sharing and revenue growth has accelerated and is now growing faster than in the U.S.," the letter read.

When a paying member transfers someone's profile to a new membership, the person outside the account holder's household will have to pay for their own subscription to be able to keep their watch history and list, as well as all other pertinent information from their profile.

Netflix explains it saw initial cancel reactions in each of the three countries it tested the paid sharing program when the news were announced. But then it saw increased acquisition and revenue as the "borrowers" activated their own paid accounts and existing members began adding extra shared accounts.

Netflix reports current account sharing has reached over 100 million households among its subscribers. "Widespread account sharing undermines our ability to invest in and improve Netflix for our paying members, as well as build our business," the company shared in the letter.

The original plan was to roll out the paid sharing program broadly in the first quarter of 2023, but the company decided to delay this initiative. "We're pleased with the most recent launches of paid sharing, and while we could have launched broadly in Q1, we found opportunities to improve the experience for members," the letter reads.

Now that Netflix rolled out paid-sharing to accounts in the U.S., you'll have to set a primary location for your account, and any other people using your Netflix subscription outside this location will lose access, unless you choose to pay for the extra members. You'll still be able to log into your account on your phone or tablet, or a new TV at a vacation rental or hotel.

The streaming service company also announced some changes to its new ad plan back in April, which lets users pay a lower price for a Netflix subscription that includes ads. In the letter, the company reports its average revenue per member (ARM) for accounts with ads, including the subscription fee and the ad revenue, is greater than that of its standard plan.

Seeing the positive revenue and minimal switching to an ad-free subscription, Netflix is improving the experience for ads plan to include 1080p-resolution video quality, up from 720p, and two concurrent streams.

Netflix has been gradually rolling out its Extra Member feature since earlier this year and it seems the time has finally come for Malaysian users to cough up the additional fee. The streaming giant has announced that it has started sending emails to subscribers who are sharing their accounts with those outside their households.

Adding an extra member is only enabled for those who subscribe to the Standard or Premium plan, with a quota of one and up to two extra members respectively. For each extra member, it will cost an additional RM13 per month on top of your subscription and the person who owns the account will be charged with it.

Once accepted, the extra member will be able to transfer their profile, which includes their viewing history and other account information, into their own account with a separate password. Extra members can only stream Netflix on one device at a time and they are limited to the features and restrictions of the primary account, such as 1080p streaming resolution for Standard and 4K for Premium accounts.

The primary account can choose the change or remove the extra member slot at any time, at a maximum of two times per billing cycle. For someone to be eligible as an extra member under your account, they must be in the same country as you and you cannot be using the service through Netflix-included packages or third-party billed accounts.
