Farmers' Manifesto for Freedom

Dear friends, 

Crisis in Indian agriculture has been in the headlines for the past two years. In the ongoing general election of 2019, farmers distress has emerged as one of the main political issues. 

Irrespective of the outcome of the election, the question of agriculture is likely to remain on the table. 

Agriculture is the largest private sector in India. Yet, every aspect of farming, be it the land or seed, trade or technology, is either regulated, restricted or prohibited. Agriculture is completely tied up with laws and regulations.   

This farmers' manifesto is, therefore, a plea from freedom.  At stake is not just the future of our farmers, but our future and that of India.

Election in a democracy is also the time for Citizens to reclaim politics. After all politics is about people, and in a democracy it is the Citizens who are the sovereign.

This is a non-partisan document, and is open to every citizen to review and endorse. A manifesto is not a perfect theoretical document. Its purpose is to reflect the context and concerns of its time. One need not agree 100% to everything in manifesto. But if one recognises and relates with the broad thrust of the document, it should be possible to endorse the Manifesto.

A diverse set of individuals have so far endorsed the Farmers' Manifesto for Freedom, it includes farmers and non-farmers, activists and academics, professionals as well as those who are personally committed to upholding freedom.
