The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) seems to have finally woken up from a deep slumber, as it is now paying attention to the long-pending issue of land acquisition that has been delaying the execution of many important projects.

Taking cognisance of the issue, municipal commissioner Om Prakash Bakoria on Saturday asked the town planning department to prepare a list of all the projects wherein the civic body is struggling to acquire land. While asking the department's officers to speed up the process and pave the way for projects, Bakoria also told them to make the occupants aware of the government's guidelines under which they are being offered compensation as per the new norms.

"The new land acquisition policy will attract a large number of occupants and help the municipal body complete the pending projects. However, the AMC authorities will have to communicate with the affected people," Bakoria said.

Though the municipal authorities refused to share the exact number of affected projects, sources in the civic body pegged the figure at more than 50. Sources also said the inability of the cash-strapped municipal body to pay compensation to the tune of Rs 200 crore to the occupants is mainly affecting the process.

A portion of the railway land is coming in the way of Kranti-Chowk to Railway station road, but the municipal body is yet to acquire it. Former municipal commissioner Sunil Kendrekar had specifically said that the civic body was unable to pay the amount demanded by the railways against the land. Similarly, the municipal authorities are struggling to acquire about 10-15 private properties on the road.

The proposed road between Champa Chowk and Jalna Road is also pending since long, as the municipal authorities are struggling to acquire a private land in the area. Besides, road projects have also been pushed back on similar grounds at Katkat Gate, Mill Corner and Roshan Gate to Maulana Azad Chowk among others.
