6. Compression Made Easy (19:49)
I've received over 1,000 client mastering demos, and masters from other studios (some charging $100 a song). 75% of what I heard, they have NO CLUE how to compress a song. Play the song loud and it breaks up into pieces! Unlike songs you hear on the radio. In this video I explain what compression is, your goals, how to use a mastering compressor, everything you need to know about compression in audio mastering is in this 20 min video!
Since the release of this video series in 2020, over 5,000 satisfied members have quickly learned how to professionally master their audio. When the course was first released, many paid $250! Then $150. Would you pay $99 for this course today? KEEP READING FOR MY SPECIAL OFFER!
Audio Mastering Secrets is the first audio mastering books that focuses entirely on how to master audio to radio quality standards, all from the comfort of your home recording studio. No expensive gear required to get amazing results!
I do not get into the specific brands of gear you should buy, the history of sound engineering, or 1,000's of compressor settings (of which maybe 40 you'll ever use). In this book I focus on mastering audio!
Common Mastering Problems And Their Solutions
In audio mastering, you will face common problems like a mix being too thin, tinny, distorted, over-saturated, muddy, or not bright enough. Sometimes you can't get the song loud enough, boomy enough, no separation, too much bass, no sparkle, and many other problems. I explain in detail which effects processors to use and their exact settings to solve these common problems. This is a great tool to refer back to when needed.
My Step-By-Step Audio Mastering Session
You will learn the 18 steps I take in the audio mastering process. From importing your file, down to loudness maximization and finally exporting a perfectly mastered song!
My Audio Mastering Laws
In this section, I cover a series of dos, do nots, and facts that basically apply to all audio mastering jobs regardless of genre. I also cover several pitfalls you will experience (just like I did) as an audio mastering engineer, and how to get through them.
Songs with too much widening would have entire parts of the mix disappear when played back in mono. Could you imagine having your song make it all the way through mastering just to find the vocals disappeared when you listened to it on your phone? It was a nightmare.
If I hear something that I don't like after I master a song I rather go back and fix the mix than try to fix the problem with mastering, that's why I basically use the same mastering setup for all of my songs.
Years of practice, a good understanding of acoustics and psychoacoustics, the ability to communicate with an artist (about things that are very difficult to put into words) and an excellent listening environment are the minimum spec for a mastering engineer imo.
So before you read this entire post, I wanted to let you know that we have an in-depth video training that covers a totally new approach to music production. Inside, I reveal why learning mastering is actually the key to unlocking your potential as a mixer and producer.
Mastering is a very special step with its own difficulties, so certain audio engineers began to specialize in these techniques. These mastering engineers were able to get better results than anyone else.
Before you bounce (export) your mix, you want to make sure that nothing is clipping. Digital distortion can often be quiet when you are mixing, but during the mastering stage all of the little imperfections in your mixes become very obvious.
Mastering is a process applied to a final mix. That means that the mix is as good as it is going to get. The mastering engineer will apply familiar audio processing like equalization, compression, and limiting (as well as other more esoteric processes) to the final stereo mix. The goal here is to attain a clean-sounding product that translates across playback systems and is of comparable loudness to contemporary commercial releases.
Experience aside, it is often a better idea to hire amastering engineer even if you doknow what you are doing. It helps to have another set of ears on that song thatyou have heard countless times throughout the writing, recording, and mixingprocesses. A fresh set of ears is almost guaranteed to do a better job thanyour own tired ears that probably just the song to be finished.
If your mix level is up against 0dB, the mastering engineerwill have no room to work. For a viable final mix, check that your mix RMS ishanging out at about -6dB and that it is peaking at around -3dB. This gives themastering engineer space to engage all the equipment you wish you had.
You get 24/7 lifetime access to the 40 best and most essential mixing techniques (you can see them all here) designed to make a huge difference in every mix you do from now on. You'll be able to access it from either your desktop or your phone with the dedicated app, and always have PDF summaries of every technique when you need it. Then if you need help, you can get it directly from me in our regular Q&A sessions or from the dedicated Facebook group. And it doesn't matter what kind of music you're into or what your DAW or console is, these secrets will work perfectly.
The reader is expected to have a basic level of underpinning knowledge about the fundamentals of sound, audio equipment, signal levels, production workflows and so on, although there are excellent additional resources on the dedicated web site (see below) to help if some of these aspects are unfamiliar. The book is structured in a progressive fashion, following a logical mixing workflow, and developing and building on ideas and techniques throughout. The book is very readable, in Mike's familiar, approachable and often humorous style, and with plenty of illustrations, all of which maintain the interest from cover to cover. The text also expands on Mike's own wealth of experience and knowledge with numerous relevant quotes and opinions from over 100 of the world's best-known engineers and producers.
To get a visual of what your compressor is doing to your music, you can use the Dynamic Range section of LEVELS by Mastering The Mix. The oscilloscope will grow green and bounce around if your audio is nice and punchy. It will turn orange, then red if your audio is over-compressed.
Mastering in Logic Pro X, or any other DAW for that matter, can be super intimidating. Even though mastering engineers use the exact same plugins as you or I, how come mastering always feels like a mystery?
Hi
Is there a templet for mastering to Vinyl as well? What would be nice is the possibility to switch between CD and vinyl mastering on the same tracks (if that is possible)
I am new at mastering but would like to do this myself in the future to save money and time.
All the best
Vegard
Hello, I was wondering if I could use this as primary research for my College work into mastering. I was wondering, do you always need to use a reference track for the mastering process or could someone still produce a just as good mix without using a reference track as a guideline?
Many thanks.
