PRONOM icons?

Is there any work underway to provide icons for files based on their PRONOM identification?

After some discussion on mastodon in relation to getting people to submit proposals, we've been talking icons.

There is a framework based on https://www.freedesktop.org/, which supplies openly licensed icon sets (and themed icons even) to linux desktops (and by osmosis webservers). Currently the framework uses MIME types for describing files (except for certain system files and application executables). 

There is the potential that this could be extended to include PRONOM identifiers, but it's not really worth starting down the track if there's already work underway in this area.

Dear Stuart,

 

There doesn’t seem to be any work at The National Archives to look at icons or do this type of work.

 

It may be a foolish question but I don’t quite understand the intention behind the project. It sounds really interesting but would it be possible to explain a little more? Where would the icons be displayed or would it be that the pronom PUIDs would be embedded within them?
