Can someone has a better idea if AppDynamics can provide better monitoring metrics than Prometheus for an application which is developed in Spring boot App. Can Prometheus has advantage over AppD related to a Spring boot metrics. I have an opinion but just wanted to know if others in the group have some thoughts on this question. Thank you.

Hi

We use AppD and Prometheus. The purposes are different.

AppD costs a lot ($$), but is good for monitoring (including performance
analysis) for Java based applications. Developers usually love AppD, it
is their world.

However, for infrastructure monitoring (e.g. Linux VMs, K8s) and generic
Open Source stacks, Prometheus is much better. As soon as we talk about
standard Open Source software, Prometheus is much better suited. It
usually does not require any developer knowledge to set up monitoring.

kind regards
Evelyn

Thanks for your reply Evelyn. Apologies for a very late reply.

I'm having a hard time convincing a group using AppD to look at Prometheus and it's benefits. They think I want to replace AppD with Prometheus but my point is to compare what Prometheus offers related to querying data in real time related to Spring boot metrics related to our java application and besides various metrics just a few to include JVM & tomcat  threads , so on ..  Does anyone have a better comparison using Prometheus & AppD related to Spring based applications?.

Perhaps the easiest way is to build a prometheus server, run it alongside AppD for a while, and then discuss with the users what benefit prometheus brings for your particular use case.
