How safe is it to run several pushgateways behind a load balancer?

I mean, if we have several pushgateway instances, behind the same DNS hostname to which clients push metrics and prometheus grabs them (also through the load balancer)
would that be supposed to work fine with all metric types?

It isn't.

That's not how the pushgateway is intended to be used, it's for occasional use by service-level batch jobs. It's not a way to convert Prometheus to push. See https://prometheus.io/docs/practices/pushing/
