What is the best way to configure/trigger an alert on host down, e.g icmp failure or service being down ?

This helps!
I am just wondering if a service is down, will the recorded value be NULL or 0 since it will not return anything ?

Up will be 0.

I see. What would you recommend for testing if a process is running or if port responds to a ping for example. I am trying to make a case for using Prometheus for general purpose monitoring if it even makes sense. Any advice is highly appreciated.
