An easy way to save energy, money and protect the climate is to replace old-style incandescent lights with compact fluorescent light bulbs.
The new-style CFLs provide a warm light, fit into most lamps and light sockets and are available at local hardware and grocery stores. Replacing four standard bulbs with CFLs reduces your electric bill by more than $100 over the life of the bulbs and prevents 5,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
Though the City encourages the use of fluorescent bulbs because they are highly energy efficient, it is important to dispose these bulbs properly because they contain mercury. Residents can recycle fluorescent bulbs at the following local stores:
Dickson Brothers, 26 Brattle St, (617) 876-6760 Economy Hardware, 438 Mass Ave, (617) 864-3300 Inman Square Hardware, 1337 Cambridge St, (617) 491-3405 Masse Hardware, 249 Walden St, (617) 876-4755 Tags Ace Hardware, 26 White Street, (617) 868-7711 Whole Foods, 340 River Street, (617) 876-6990Residents may also bring fluorescent bulbs to the Cambridge Recycling Drop-off Center at 147 Hampshire Street during open hours (Tues/Thurs 4-7:30pm & Sat 9-4pm) or to one of the City's annual household hazardous waste collections. 2007 dates: June 23rd & October 13 from 9-1pm at 450 Concord Ave.
