Access to health care is a major barrier for many young people transitioning from foster care to adulthood. Project Everlast in Omaha has had the good fortune to create a partnership with our Community Health Centers to provide free health screenings and discounted care to young people who lack medical insurance up to age 24. The Centers have also hired staff to serve as a first point of contact to assist youth in identifying their health care needs and accessing programs to help pay for them.
Youth wishing to access health and dental services may contact:
Charles Drew Health Center:
Bree Schweigart, Youth Navigator
(402)457-1200 x246 Phone
One World Community Health Center:
Beth Hansen, Health Advocate
(402) 73404110 ext 320
In a recent survey of young people in the Omaha metro area, of 86 respondents, 35% reported experiencing a medical or dental problem but avoided going to the doctor because they couldn’t pay for it. Please share this information with colleagues, young people and professionals that may encounter alumni of foster care.
As always, thank you for all you do to improve the lives of youth in foster care.
