Hi All,

I am very impressed with the open source multi-body vehicle models already included in the 8.0 release. I know there are some validation papers for some of the tire models (and one comparing chrono::vehicle with Adams/Car), but I was wondering if there is any documentation about the source of the data used to build some of the more realistic vehicle models (M113, Nissan_Patrol, VW_microbus, audi, citybus, hmmwv, etc.)? For instance, where did all the data for the Nissan Patrol come from? It would also be very helpful to know which models are of physical vehicles and which ones are generic (theoretical) vehicles (mtv, rccar, sedan, etc).

I'm not sure how this documentation would be easiest to find (maybe a long comment in one of the files, a comment with a link to an external document, a document hosted on your website), but I think it would really contribute a lot to any project using the existing vehicle model's.

Thanks,

Trevor

Hi Trevor,

For a few vehicles, we’ve had this kind of information available in the corresponding subdirectories of the data/ directory (e.g., this one for the HMMWV model).

After you posted your message, we added a few more for other vehicles. I have also compiled this information in another file this time in the source directory of the Chrono::Vehicle models library.

While we’re on the subject of data used in all these Chrono models, it is important to mention that we must ensure we only use information that is freely available and compatible with the BSD-3 Chrono license. This is also part of the reason why the Chrono::Vehicle models library contains quite a few “exotic” vehicles.   If a vehicle is not listed there, this means that the data it uses is synthetic and just reasonable for that particular type of vehicle.

It would be great if you (or anyone else on this forum) can provide better data for any of the existing models, or else provide a full set of JSON specification files for a new model (as long as you provide the data sources and ensure they are appropriate for inclusion in an open-source, BSD-licensed package such as Chrono).

Best,
Radu
