OK. Here's where we stand (as I see it). We're going to have to
figure out when we're all arriving in Chicago, then figure out a time
to get together. I understand that we have some time allotted
(Thursday? Friday AM?) to get together and assemble our posters.
Will this be enough? Will the all-powerful poster board be there
waiting for us, or will one of us need to schlep one to Chicago? My
impression is that this is going to be a cut and paste operation with
as much artistic flair applied as possible. So, we each do our parts
(more on that below), physically bring the pieces to Chicago, borrow
some scissors (can't bring those on the plane), glue stick and
markers, put it all together and then stand by and answer questions.
Here are some specific duty assignment recommendations:
1. Dawn: have a baby:)
2. Dawn, if you can also put together a narrative/visual piece based
on your survey, that would be great. Keep in mind it will need to go
on the poster, so I'd think that it needs to fit on a piece of paper
not bigger than 8.5 x 11 and look as pretty as possible.
3. Kerra: could you finalize an overall design/layout for the board?
A space on the board to present and summarize your survey results
would be great. Since you've got that piece down, it might be
appropriate to see if you can track down (maybe you already have) and
put together a kind of "Top 10" reasons to join and include that as
part of the poster. I know WA has done this--it's on the membership
form I've uploaded to our files.
4. Suzanna: Can you address the "analyzing membership" and/or
recruitment piece? Again--maybe just a list of 10 strategies (for
each?) would be appropriate for our limited space?
5. Me: I can focus on the program advocacy component, i.e., what your
organization can do to help promote and support your program.
6. All: Graphics? Pictures? I was thinking maybe a collage of
organization logos would be appropriate? Any other ideas to dress it
up?
7. I've got my Flip camera and am planning on bringing it. We should
come up with some questions to ask other ELs during the poster session
(e.g., why did you join?) and then post it to youtube.
Will this do it? It's going to be very hit and miss for me as I
approach departure date. I'm teaching a "tech in the library"
certification class for the first time that begins on the 1st, so
honestly that's going to be my focus. I'm confident that we will be
able to pull this off, but I'm going to strongly recommend that the
"tangible product" component of this program be drastically changed or
abandoned all together. Again, I'm most looking forward to seeing you
all, doing the networking thing and attending some sessions!
Let me know what you think,
Steve
