Here's what I received from our membership chair (see below). This
reinforces the fact that a "one size fits all" approach will not work
due to differences from state to state. For example, in this state
schools tend to refer to anyone who works in the library as a
"librarian"--certified or not--and thus it's difficult to put together
an accurate database. The state has taken steps toward addressing
this, so for now I think that's part of our "steps for analyzing
membership": define the position clearly within state standards and
build from there.

Hi Pat,

As part of our 2009 Emerging Leader project, I need some help in
getting ideas as to how local ALA/AASL affiliates (e.g., WLMA) can
analyze membership. I know from my brief period on the board that
there is no easy answer to this, but was hoping that you could provide
some insight. I've got some ideas, but my guess is that you've spent
some time grappling with these issues yourself over the years. To
simplify matters, here are a few questions:
How has WLMA attempted to analyze membership statistics in the past?
What are some current methods employed in membership analysis?
What are some of the barriers to accurate membership counts, and do
you have any ideas as to how avoid/circumvent these barriers?
Thanks for any help/insight you can provide--I really appreciate it!

Hi Steve! In my 10 years on the Board, there has never been an
analysis on the membership. Noone has ever worried too much about
it. If people wanted to join they did, and in October letters have
been sent to those who had not paid up. Some paid up and then some
didn't until the following year. Membership has pretty much been left
up to the region officers to get. Since the regions have become so
inefficient the past few years, nothing has been done except to reach
each school in the state with a letter to the librarian asking that
they join and attend conference. Conference was purposely held on
this weekend in October because it was a day when no classes were
held, but in the past few years now, more and more School District are
requiring teachers and librarians to attend workshops held in District
so the attendance has been dropping and then we come off of Portland
last year and they couldn't sign up on line and that pretty much was
our problem. I sincerely believe that if Joanna would get us up
online, we would see quite a turn around because the public is very
computer oriented and if it is easy for them to do online, they will.
Now our problem is the cutbacks in the librarians!!! And I don't
think they will join if they are just teachers unless they feel that
they will become librarians again somewhere. It is a really hard
issue right now. I don't know that I helped you much! But those are
my ideas. See you soon! Pat Mc

I agree that waving the first year of membership is a good idea. This is what we are doing in our state, and, so far, it is working. We also send out our newsletter to every public-school librarian (across the state) regardless of membership. This is also encouraging others to join because they are readig about conferences (visiting authors) and success stories from people who are members.

I am available for a live chat tonight, and, any night this week. I know how to use Skype. I haven't used anything else, but I can if I need too. I am posting a rough draft of a top 10 list. I can edit this however I need to. I just wanted to have something to start with.

Yup--let's get in touch when we get into town.  I leave Thursday, and will have everything done by then.  I'll post and bring print outs of my piece.

Hello All,

I'm sorry that I'm not going to see you in Chicago.  Is there anything else that you would like me to do?  I can print everything out if you'd like, I'd just have to mail it to your hotel in Chicago.  Just let me know asap.

Thanks,

I am arriving on Thursday at 5. I do not have a portable printer that I can bring. I will print out my top 10 list and a bio. Will there be somewhere we can print on Friday? We are going to need to type and print headings for the board. We could also use a large AASL emblem. If I copy and paste it from the web it is not good quality.

I just updated the design of the board. It is file "Board X". I already have the documents labeled and printed for the left side. I still need to type my bio and locate a picture. If you all will look at the board design and let me know if this looks okay. I will try to create the large heading for the center of the board. I do not know if I will get the size right not having the board. That's why I'm thinking we will need printer access. I agree that we will need some pics/logos to go around the documents for decoration.

OK.  I'm in the process of writing, collecting info, logos, etc.  I'll post what I can and bring the rest.  I figure I'll bring more than I think we need, then we can leave stuff off if necessary.

Hey everyone,
I posted the analyzing piece. Please feel free to make it prettier
Kerra. :) Like I said my printer quit on me so I need some one to
print it for me. Should we see if there is a 24 hour kinkos near by?
Or does someone have a business center in their hotel. I have a
feeling that we are not going to have a printer in the convention
center. Maybe we should meet Thursday night or really early friday
morning to get this right.

Let me know what you all think. I leave in the morning so call if you
want to get in contact immediately. 804-929-2884. I will try too
check online as much as I can.

OK.  I've printed out a bunch of stuff.  I also did my bio--I uploaded a doc of mine if you all want to copy the pic size format, etc.  I've tried to go heavy on the visuals and light on the text--I figure we'll be standing there explaining it anyway.  I'm sure if we feel like we need to do any last minute printing we can find a place to do it.  I'll have my laptop and some flash drives.  I'll also have my Flip video camera, so we can do some interviews and play them through my laptop, if we want to.

I've printed the "Top 10 reasons" and the survey stuff just in case, but the analyzing membership document is screwed up--Suzanna, can you redo/print that one?

Kerra--along w/the colored paper, do you have some border we can use?

Let's just plan on having a computer there anyway.  I'll have my laptop.  Do we need to tell anyone that we'll be using this new technology?  We can have some state org web sites up, maybe the videos, perhaps a youtube video, whatever--we'll figure it out.

I need to add a pic and my bio is finished. Thanks for the example. Yours looks great, Steve.
