Hi Everyone,

So Kerra and I talked about the need for a website on the last group
page. What do you think Dawn and Steve?

Suzanna Panter - Feb 4, 2009 2:33 PM
Hi everyone. Kerra and I were talking on the train to winter park and
we were thinking that maybe we should go a step further in our
project. I (we- Kerra please let me know if you disagree with part or
all. I hate speaking for other people.) think in order to be taken
seriously in this organization we should launch our own website. We
can include things that would make membership valuable for the average
school librarian. We can collect hit counts and feedback from our
users. We will use that as proof of why these changes are needed. This
would need to be done quickly so we can have enough time to evaluate
and gather feedback.

Things I would like to see on the site to be beneficial to members.
Sample lessons and collaborative ideas.
A mentor directory by state. People can sign up to mentor others or be
mentored.
Some kind of web based professional development presentations.
NBCT guidance. Help specifically for librarians seeking NCBT.

What do you guys think? Ann Martin said that they are revamping the
AASL website but I still don't think it will be anything like what we
want.

Suzzana,
This is exactly what we discussed. I agree that we need to "show" what
we are thinking as far as changes go. I just attended my district
meeting on Saturday. Our state library media specialist presented the
new library standards and she discussed the upcoming budget cuts. I
think it is going to be harder now to get new members to AASL. I think
that updating, revising, and improving the website is a great way to
spread the word about AASL and keep us all connected.

Hello Suzanna, Kerra and Stephen,

I like the idea of creating a website, but wonder if our suggestions could be incorporated into AASL's new design since Suzanna has an "in."  It would be ideal to have all of this information in one central location.  Right now I'm always gathering information for lesson ideas from LM_NET and ALSC; however, I don't know if it really goes with our expected outcome for our project:

Expected Outcomes:  AASL would like for an Emerging Leader team to develop a
"plug and play module" for AASL and AASL state affiliates to use for reaching out to
non-member professionals.  This module may include step-by-step recommendations
for analyzing current membership at the national and state level with an action plan
for marketing membership to library media specialists, who are not members.  The target
audience would be library students and library media specialists who are not currently
members.

I think that we should be in contact with our mentors so that we have a clearer idea of what we are expected to produce.  I would hate for us to spend copious amounts of time on something that may not be what they were expecting.  Let me know your thoughts on this.  I am willing to email our mentors on the group's behalf.

I think that the way to get more members is to offer them something.
The new AASL site is up and running. What do you think? I think
contacting the mentor is a good idea, but I am afraid that we may get
shot down because "that is not how we do things."

Here's some info. I found on the web regarding why people do and do
not join professional organizations. These are similiar to responses I
have gotten from nonmembers of ALA. I have merged the responses I've
gotten with "industry" related topics from the following site:

http://www.jobscareers.com/articles/developingyourcareer.html

Why don’t more people join? To some, it is:

Costs
The time after work
The extra effort
The time taken away from work
The thought of networking

Here are the benefits of joining a professional group:

Expand your professional network.
Learn about hot topics and issues to remain current. Leaders present
and discuss current topics/trends.
Increase others awareness of your program.
Gets you to think outside of the box.
Discover what others are doing.
Learn about vendors and their products.

I am in the process of meeting with a professor from the University of
South Alabama to plan an opportunity for me to interact with students
in the library media program to discuss their thoughts/concerns about
professional organizations.

Web site is definitely the way to go (what would be the
alternative?). I'm with Dawn--who is our mentor, and how much
flexibility do we have with this thing? Like all of you, I'm sure, I
can't afford to be inefficient with the time dedicated to this. I
kind of wish we had more input on topic...

It appears that we have to provide a poster. Here are the guidelines:

There are also pictures. Seems decidedly mid-20th century, to me.
